Manila Mayhem: Sweat, Street Food, and Seriously Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm *coca-cola right now. manila… wow. just… wow. i landed yesterday and it’s already a sensory overload in the best possible way, which is to say, a completely overwhelming way. the humidity is clinging to everything like a desperate ex - 26.64 feels like 26.64, temp min 25.66, temp max 27.03, pressure 1010, humidity 81, sea level 1010, grnd level 1011. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
seriously, i’m not even sure where to start. i’m staying in intramuros, which is cool, like, super cool, but also feels like stepping back in time. it’s all crumbling stone and echoing footsteps. i found this amazing little hole-in-the-wall restaurant down a side street - seriously, you could get lost just wandering around. i’m talking about the kind of place where the menu is handwritten in tagalog and the chef just yells out orders.
someone told me that the best adobo is at Luto na! - check it out: https://www.yelp.com/biz/luto-na-manila-intramuros. i heard that, and i mean really heard that, from a guy who looked like he hadn’t slept in a week and was wearing a shirt that said ‘i survived manila.’ he wasn’t wrong.
and the streets! oh my god, the streets. jeepneys are a thing, obviously, but they’re also a whole experience. like, you’re crammed in with a bunch of strangers, blasting music, and praying the driver doesn’t swerve into a wall. it’s terrifying and exhilarating all at once. i tried to take a photo, but my phone died. classic.
I spent most of today just wandering around Binondo Chinatown - it’s insane. like, seriously, the most densely packed, most vibrant, most chaotic Chinatown I’ve ever seen. you can find literally anything there. i bought a ridiculously ornate fan and a bag of dried mangoes. i’m pretty sure i’m going to be dreaming in red lanterns.
Speaking of chaos, the traffic is… legendary. i’m pretty sure i saw a guy riding a motorcycle with three passengers. and a dog. it’s just… a thing. if you get bored, Cebu and Davao are just a short drive away.
I’m trying to keep track of everything, but my brain is starting to feel like scrambled eggs. here’s a quick rundown of essentials:
*Sunscreen: Seriously, don’t even think about it without it.
*Insect repellent: Mosquitoes are vicious.
*Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
*Cash: ATMs aren’t always reliable.
*A sense of adventure:* You’re gonna need it.
I overheard some tourists at a cafe saying that the best place to watch the sunset is at Fort Santiago - check out TripAdvisor for more info: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g298467-d123473-Reviews-Fort_Santiago-Manila.html. I also heard that the nightlife in Poblacion is insane - but maybe a little too intense for a sleep-deprived blogger like me.
overall, manila is… a lot. it’s loud, it’s crowded, it’s chaotic, and it’s absolutely incredible. i’m not sure i’m ready to leave, but i’m definitely going to try to sleep for at least six hours tonight. wish me luck.
