Manila Mayhem: Sweat, Sampaguita, and Seriously Good Adobo
okay, so. manila. wow. just…wow. i’m still peeling the city off my skin, you know? like, it’s not a bad thing, it’s just… intense. i’m a botanist, and usually, i’m all about quiet observation, meticulously cataloging ferns and whatnot. manila? it’s the opposite of meticulous. it’s a glorious, chaotic explosion of life.
I just checked and it's… a humid blanket draped over everything right now. twenty-nine point four, feels like thirty-oh-point-five. not exactly ideal for identifying delicate orchids, but hey, the bougainvillea are thriving. seriously, the bougainvillea. everywhere.
I spent most of my time wandering around *Intramuros, which is… well, it’s like stepping back in time, but with scooters whizzing past and vendors hawking mangoes. It’s a weird, wonderful juxtaposition. I got completely lost, naturally. My sense of direction is notoriously terrible. I ended up in this tiny courtyard, surrounded by crumbling walls and jasmine vines, and just… breathed. It was a moment of unexpected peace amidst the madness.
Someone told me that the best way to experience Intramuros is to hire a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage). Apparently, the drivers know all the hidden spots and can tell you stories about the Spanish colonial era. I didn’t do it, because, budget botanist, remember? But I definitely heard the clip-clop of hooves echoing through the streets, and it added to the atmosphere.
Food. Oh god, the food. I ate so much adobo. Like, an embarrassing amount. I also tried balut… once. Let’s just say it’s an experience. I’m not sure I’ll be repeating it. I found this amazing little carinderia (small eatery) near Quiapo Market - seriously, check it out on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/ - where I had the best sinigang of my life. Sour, savory, utterly addictive.
I overheard some drunk tourists complaining about the traffic. Honestly, the traffic is a thing. But it’s also part of the manila experience. Just embrace the chaos, roll with it, and maybe download a ride-hailing app. Grab is your friend.
Speaking of friends, the people are incredible. So warm, so welcoming. I got chatting to a woman selling sampaguita garlands (those tiny, fragrant jasmine flowers) and she gave me a whole bunch for free. Just because. That’s manila in a nutshell, I think. Unexpected kindness.
I also spent a day exploring Binondo Chinatown, which is apparently the oldest Chinatown in the world. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. So many sights, sounds, and smells. I got completely overwhelmed by the sheer variety of ingredients in the markets. I’m pretty sure I saw a fruit I’d never even dreamed of. Check out TripAdvisor for some recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/.
I heard that if you want to find authentic, non-touristy shops, you need to venture beyond the main streets. Apparently, there’s a whole network of hidden alleyways and backstreets where you can find everything from vintage clothing to handcrafted souvenirs. I didn’t have time to explore them all, but it’s definitely on my list for next time. I’m already planning a return trip.
If you get bored, Tagaytay and Batangas* are just a short drive away - beautiful scenery, cooler temperatures, and a chance to escape the city for a bit. I’m also looking into some local botany groups - maybe I can join a field trip and learn more about the philippine flora. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PhilippinePlants/
Honestly, manila is not for the faint of heart. It’s loud, it’s crowded, it’s hot, and it’s chaotic. But it’s also vibrant, exciting, and utterly unforgettable. Go. Just… go. And be prepared to sweat.
Oh, and one last thing: someone warned me about pickpockets in Quiapo Market. Keep your belongings close!
