Lost in the Echoes of Freiburg: A Botanist's (Slightly Panicked) Field Notes
okay, so. freiburg. wow. i’m still covered in pollen, probably. and slightly traumatized by the sheer volume of greenery. i’m elara, by the way, and i’m a botanist. usually, i’m happily cataloging moss in damp forests, not… this. but a grant, a vague promise of rare alpine flora, and a serious need to escape my lab landed me here.
I just checked and it’s… a sort of hazy, golden afternoon. Like someone spilled honey all over the sky. Hope you like that kind of thing. The air is thick with the scent of linden trees, which is lovely, until you realize you’re basically swimming in pollen. My allergies are staging a full-blown rebellion.
I’m staying in the *Stühlinger district, which is… intense. Cobblestone streets, tiny shops overflowing with things I don’t understand, and a general feeling that everyone knows something I don’t. I stumbled into this little cafe, 'Café Gold', and overheard a conversation about some local festival involving giant pretzels and questionable folk dancing. Apparently, it’s a big deal. I’m avoiding it.
“Don’t go near the Markthalle on a Saturday afternoon,” a woman with a truly impressive collection of scarves warned me, sipping her coffee. “It’s a madhouse. You’ll lose your wallet and your sanity.”
I spent most of yesterday wandering through the Botanischer Garten. It’s… overwhelming. Like, seriously. They have everything. I nearly fainted when I saw a Welwitschia mirabilis. In Europe! Who knew? I’m trying to document as much as I can, but my notebook is already overflowing with frantic scribbles and pressed leaves.
I’m trying to be organized, so here’s a list of things I’ve learned so far (mostly through panicked observation):
*Bächle: These tiny canals running along the streets? Don’t step in them. Apparently, it’s bad luck. And wet. Very wet.
*Schlossberg: The hill overlooking the city? Worth the climb, even if you’re wheezing like an asthmatic badger. The views are incredible.
*Black Forest Cake: It’s a thing. It’s delicious. Consume responsibly.
*Local Beer: Try the 'Rothaus' - it’s surprisingly good.
Someone told me that the Vauban district is a really interesting experiment in sustainable living. Apparently, they’ve got car-free zones and solar panels everywhere. I might check that out tomorrow, if my allergies haven’t completely incapacitated me.
I’m also trying to find some information on the local flora beyond the Botanical Garden. I heard that there are some interesting orchid species growing in the surrounding forests, but finding reliable information is proving difficult. I’ve been scouring local forums - check out Freiburg Forum - but most of it is in German. Google Translate is my new best friend.
If you get bored, Basel and Zurich are just a short drive away. I’m considering a quick escape to Switzerland, just to breathe some non-pollen-filled air. I’m also looking at TripAdvisor for some more ideas, but honestly, I’m mostly just trying to survive.
I’m going to try and find a decent pharmacy. My eyes are itching like crazy. Wish me luck. And send antihistamines. Seriously.
Oh, and one last thing: I overheard some drunk students saying that the Münstermarkt* is the place to go for the best local produce. Apparently, the farmers there are fiercely proud of their vegetables. I’ll investigate. Maybe I can find something to soothe my irritated skin.
Check out Yelp for restaurant recommendations, if you're feeling brave.
