Kigali Diaries: Where the Air Feels Like a Hug

@Grace Miller3/1/2026blog

kigali, you're a city that doesn't play by the rules. one minute you're sipping strong coffee in a buzzing cafe, the next you're staring at misty volcanoes that look like they're breathing. i just checked and it's...21.92°c right now, feels like 20.85, which is basically the universe saying 'here, have a hug.' the humidity's at 26%, so it's not sticky, just...present. like that friend who shows up unannounced but brings good vibes. if you need a change of scenery, nearby cities are just a short drive away, but honestly, why leave this weird, wonderful place? someone told me that the best street food is hidden behind the old market, but they wouldn't say where. i heard that the local coffee shop has the best pastries, but the wifi is spotty. i believe it. i also believe the rumors about the yoga studio overlooking the lake being magical, but i haven't tried it yet. i'm more focused on finding the best spot to watch the sunset over the hills. i stumbled upon this hidden gem of a cafe yesterday. it's called 'the misty mug,' and it's run by a woman who looks like she's seen a thing or two. the walls are covered in maps and postcards from places she's been, and the coffee... let's just say it's the kind of brew that makes you forget your own name for a minute. they have this weird rule: no phones allowed. just you, the steam, and the sound of rain on the tin roof. it's like stepping into a different century.

if you're into that whole 'digital nomad' vibe, there's a co-working space downtown that's surprisingly quiet. they have fast wifi and even faster coffee. but be warned: the power cuts sometimes. it's part of the charm, i guess.

i haven't seen any ghosts yet, but i'm keeping my eyes peeled. the city feels alive, like it's holding secrets in every alleyway. maybe i'll write a song about it. or maybe i'll just keep drinking coffee and watching the world go by. either way, it's good.
