Helsinki's Hum: A Drummer's Damp Dispatch

okay, so. helsinki. right? i wasn’t expecting…this. i just checked and it’s drizzling sideways, a proper Finnish hug of dampness. hope you like that kind of thing. i’m a touring drummer, you know? usually, i’m dodging stage lights and screaming fans. this is…different. quieter. and wetter.

I’m here for a week, laying down tracks for some indie band called ‘Echo Bloom’ - apparently, they’re huge in…somewhere. i don’t know. i just hit the drums. the studio’s in *Punavuori, which is…nice. lots of brick buildings, a few quirky cafes. i’ve been living off strong coffee and those cinnamon buns everyone raves about. seriously, get the cinnamon buns.

I spent yesterday wandering around, trying to shake off the jet lag and the studio vibes.
Esplanadi Park was…surprisingly empty. i guess the weather isn’t exactly picnic-friendly. i stumbled across this tiny vintage shop - ‘Retro Rhapsody’ - and nearly lost an hour sifting through old leather jackets. seriously considering buying one, even though i live in california. it just feels right here. you can check it out on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/biz/retro-rhapsody-helsinki.

Someone told me that the saunas here are a
thing. like, a serious cultural ritual. apparently, you go, you sweat, you jump in the freezing water, you repeat. sounds…intense. i’m not sure i’m brave enough. i did overhear a couple of locals arguing about the best way to prepare rye bread. it was surprisingly heated.

I’m staying in a little Airbnb near
Kallio*. it’s…lived-in. the shower pressure is questionable, but the location is great. i can walk to most places. if you get bored, Tallinn is just a short ferry ride away - apparently, it’s a total party town. i’ll have to check it out if i have time.

“Don’t trust the seagulls,” a very drunk man told me outside a bar last night. “They’re plotting something.”

I’m trying to find some decent live music. i checked TripAdvisor https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g189913-Activities-Helsinki.html but it’s mostly classical stuff. i’m hoping to find something a little more…my vibe. maybe some jazz, or some experimental electronica.

I heard that the design district is amazing, but i haven’t made it there yet. i’m also supposed to check out the Temppeliaukio Church - the one built into the rock. sounds pretty wild. i’m trying to soak it all in, you know? even the dampness. even the seagulls.

Okay, gotta go. echo bloom needs me to lay down some seriously moody beats. wish me luck. and maybe pack a raincoat if you’re planning a trip. you’ll need it. check out this local forum for more tips: https://www.visithelsinki.com/en/.
