hacking the rhythm in hsinchu: a busker's tale

so i’m in hsinchu, tw, and the weather’s this constant 18.32°C thing, not too hot, not too cold, but the humidity? man, it’s 81% and it feels like you’re breathing a damp sponge. if you get bored, taipei’s a scooter ride away, and taichung’s a train hop.

someone told me that the night market here is the best-kept secret, but i heard it’s getting too touristy now. and then there’s the local i met who said,

“this city? it’s all about the tech, but the soul? you gotta find the old temples and the street art. it’s hiding in plain sight.”

so as a diy busker, i’m always on the hunt for that perfect spot. the pressure is 1020, which means the air is kinda heavy, but i played at the train station and made enough for a bowl of beef noodles.

“you should busk near the university,” said a street food vendor. “the students dig the beats, and they’ve got coin to spare.”

then again, another local warned me,

“watch out for the cops. they’re cool about it most days, but if you start drawing a crowd, they’ll ask you to move along.”

i just checked and it's a steady 18.32°C out there, hope you're cool with that kind of thing.

the city has this vibe of being stuck between two worlds: ancient temples and futuristic buildings. i’ve been hitting the streets with my guitar and a hat, trying to catch the rhythm.

check out Hsinchu Night Market if you’re into food and chaos.

if you need a bite, this local eatery is legit.

and for more info, see the Hsinchu Travel Forum.

the ground level pressure is 950, which is lower than sea level, and that’s a bit weird, but whatever, the music flows.

i’m thinking of heading to the coast next. the busker life is all about going where the vibe is.

and yeah, that’s the update from hsinchu.
