frozen spray cans and ghost tags: a minneapolis street art odyssey

okay, i'm sitting in this freezing-ass coffee shop near the Mississippi, fingers so numb i can barely type, but i gotta get this out before the frost claims my thoughts entirely. the other day, i was cruising the industrial district looking for fresh walls when i spotted these insane numbers tagged in ultraviolet paint: 5018651 and 1840006719. they glowed under my blacklight, and it felt like a secret handshake from some long-gone burner crew. has anyone else seen these? i tried Googling but all i got was a bunch of nonsense about weather station IDs. maybe it's a code? who knows.

as a traveling street artist, i've been through my share of cold cities, but minneapolis takes the cake. i'm talking -8.19°c out there right now, but the wind chill makes it feel like -15.19. pressure's sitting at 1020 hpa, which i guess means the sky's clear, but all i see is a blanket of grey slush. humidity's 55%, so my nose won't stop dripping. i just checked the weather and it's basically a freezer that's left the door open. hope you're into that.

the street art scene here is ridiculous in the best way. you've got massive pieces in the north loop that change every few months, and then you've got tiny stencils tucked into the back alleys of dinkytown that feel like secret messages. i spent a whole day in the west bank tunnels, where the acoustics are insane and the walls are covered in tags that look ancient. i even ran into a crew from bulletproff (yeah, that's their name) who were painting a massive mural of a robot made of cheese. check out this map i scraped off a forum that supposedly marks all the legal walls:

that area around the coordinates is a goldmine, but good luck finding a spot that hasn't been buffed within a week. i heard from a guy at the paint shop that the city's new anti-graffiti task force uses infrared cameras, so they can see your heat signature even in a blizzard. that might explain why my piece on the old grain silo got painted over in two hours.

speaking of interesting sightings, i was scouting near some barns on the outskirts (yeah, the city still has a few) and i saw a bald eagle perched on a dead tree. it was majestic as hell. then i turned and saw this massive red barn with a faded advertisement for sarsaparilla. total minnesota vibe. i snapped a few pics, though my phone died from the cold. but i found these on unsplash that capture the weird beauty of this place:

brown wooden barn under blue sky during daytime

black and white eagle flying under blue sky during daytime

white and black bird flying under blue sky during daytime

there's something about the cold that makes colors pop, even when everything else looks dead.

now, what about food? you need fuel. i've been hitting up manny's cafe on east lake street. their hash browns are legendary and they never kick you out even if you're covered in paint. Manny's Cafe on Yelp is a must. for art supplies, i go to the art forces in the north loop-they've got the best spray caps and they don't ask questions. also, City Pages has a decent rundown of the current legal walls if you want to avoid the cops. and if you're thinking about doing a tour, TripAdvisor lists some okay walking tours, though i'd rather just wander.

local gossip: i heard that the mysterious tags with those numbers 5018651 and 1840006719 might be coordinates to a secret underground show space. but 50.18651, 18.40067 is somewhere in europe, that's weird. maybe it's a reference to a legendary burner from czech? i'm not sure. another rumor is that if you paint a piece with those numbers and leave it in the right spot, you'll get an invite to a crew that's supposedly called the "north pole invaders." i'm skeptical but i'm tempted to try. anyways, i'll keep you posted.

if you get bored of the city, st. paul is just a short drive away, and you can actually find decent thai food there that doesn't involve snow peas. or, if you're feeling extra, hop on 35 and head up to duluth for some lake-effect misery. i've done it-it's worth the frozen windshield wipers.

overall, minneapolis in winter is a brutal mistress, but the art scene keeps me warm. i'll be back out tomorrow, hoping the paint doesn't freeze in the can. maybe i'll crack the code on those numbers. until then, stay warm and keep tagging, but not on historical buildings, man-those buffs are tragic.

(almost forgot: there's a solid MinnPost piece on the city's evolving graffiti laws that's worth a read if you're planning to visit.)
