Freezing Toes and Foggy Mornings: A Wild Ride Through Coon Rapids
woke up this morning to a world that looked like it had been dipped in frost. seriously, it was -14.84 degrees outside-feels like -18.27 if you're unlucky enough to be standing in the wind. i just checked and it's still there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. but hey, that's minnesota for you-brutal, beautiful, and completely unapologetic.
i'm not even sure what i was expecting when i rolled into coon rapids, but it wasn't this. the air was so crisp it almost hurt to breathe, and the sky was this weird, pale blue that made everything look like a black-and-white photo. i heard from a local at the gas station that the best way to survive is to layer up like you're going on an arctic expedition. someone told me that if you don't wear at least three pairs of socks, your toes might just fall off. not sure if that's true, but i wasn't about to test it.
anyway, i decided to take a walk around town to see what all the fuss was about. the first thing i noticed? how quiet it was. like, eerily quiet. i guess when it's this cold, even the birds stay in bed. but then i stumbled upon this little coffee shop-cozy, warm, and smelling like heaven. i grabbed a latte and overheard two old-timers talking about the "good old days" when winters were even worse. classic minnesota nostalgia, right?
if you get bored, minneapolis and st. paul are just a short drive away, but honestly, coon rapids has its own charm. it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare these days. and if you're into nature, the mississippi river isn't far-though i wouldn't recommend a swim unless you're into instant hypothermia.
here's the thing: coon rapids isn't flashy. it's not trying to be the next big thing. but that's what makes it special. it's real. it's raw. and it's definitely not for the faint of heart-especially in january.
before i wrap this up, i have to mention the weather again because, well, it's kind of the star of the show here. the humidity is at 63%, which sounds low, but trust me, it feels like 100% when you're freezing your butt off. and the pressure? 1023. sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it's just another day in minnesota.
anyway, if you're planning a trip here, just know what you're getting into. bring layers. bring patience. and maybe bring a sense of humor-you're gonna need it.
