Dust & Echoes in Phoenix: A Slightly Broken Trip

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 4004887… that’s the number of times i’ve stared at a cactus and thought, ‘you know, you’re kinda judging me.’ and 1484993432? honestly, who even knows. it just felt…significant, i guess? like a timestamp on a really weird dream.

Phoenix. it’s…hot. like, aggressively hot. the air pressure was 1014, which felt like someone was gently squeezing my lungs. humidity was 12, which is basically a dry sauna. the temp felt like 31.4, and the min was 33.9 - yeah, it was consistently unpleasant. i checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

I landed at Sky Harbor and immediately felt like i’d stepped into a sci-fi movie. all chrome and glass, and people just…moving. i grabbed a ride on an Uber - seriously, the drivers here are intense. one of them kept talking about conspiracy theories involving pigeons. it was…a lot.

I was aiming for Roosevelt Row, you know, the arts district. it’s supposed to be cool, but honestly, it felt a bit…sterile. too many trendy boutiques and overpriced tacos. i found a little dive bar called ‘The Rattlesnake’ - it was dimly lit, smelled faintly of stale beer and regret, and had a jukebox playing mostly 80s hair bands. perfect.

I spent most of my time wandering around, trying to capture the light. my camera roll is already overflowing with shots of adobe buildings and prickly pear cacti. i’m pretty sure i’m going to need a new hard drive.

Someone told me that the Heard Museum is worth a visit - apparently, they have a fantastic collection of Native American art. i’ll check it out tomorrow, if i can stomach another minute of this heat. I heard that the food trucks near downtown are surprisingly decent, but be prepared to wait in line. Seriously, the lines are epic.

I stumbled across a street artist painting a mural on a brick wall - it was a huge, vibrant depiction of a desert landscape. he was wearing a backwards baseball cap and a t-shirt that said ‘existential dread.’ classic. He said, and i quote, ‘just trying to make the concrete a little less boring.’

I’m staying at a little Airbnb in the Melrose Heights neighborhood. it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the walls are thin, the plumbing is questionable, and my neighbor seems to be practicing the didgeridoo at 3 am. if you get bored, Tucson is just a short drive away.

I tried to find a decent coffee shop, but everything seems to be serving some kind of bizarre, overly-sweet concoction. i ended up grabbing a black coffee from a gas station - it was surprisingly good. I’m officially declaring war on Phoenix coffee. Check out Yelp for some local spots, though - maybe I missed something. Yelp Search

I also spent an afternoon exploring the Desert Botanical Garden. it’s actually really beautiful, a little oasis of green in the middle of all that brown. They have a ton of different cacti and succulents - it’s like a giant, prickly museum.

Okay, I need to go. my phone is dying, my feet hurt, and i think i just saw a scorpion. Seriously, this place is wild. I’m going to try and find a pool. Maybe drown my sorrows.

Pro-tip: bring a gallon of water. Seriously. And sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen. And maybe a therapist. TripAdvisor Phoenix Attractions

And one last thing: don’t trust anyone who tells you Phoenix is ‘cool.’ It’s not. It’s just…hot. Seriously. Reddit Phoenix
