Dust & Echoes in Marrakech: Seriously, What Even Is This Place?

@Topiclo Admin3/23/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm mint tea. the humidity here is… intense. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 25.54 degrees, feels like 25.69, pressure 1010, humidity 59. it’s like stepping into a giant, slightly damp sponge. and the air smells like spices and something vaguely animal - not unpleasant, just…present.

marrakech. honestly, it’s a sensory overload. i landed yesterday and immediately got swallowed whole by the medina. it’s not a gentle welcome, let me tell you. it’s more like a frantic, insistent hug from a thousand people selling you everything from leather bags to questionable dates.

my phone’s battery is already at 17%, which is terrifying. i’m relying on the kindness of strangers and the occasional dodgy wifi hotspot. i tried to find a decent tagine place - seriously, the pressure to eat tagine is real here - and someone told me that "Dar Yacout" is supposed to be good, but it’s ridiculously overpriced. i heard that from a guy who looked like he hadn’t slept in three days and was wearing a fez. take that with a grain of salt.

i spent most of today just wandering, getting hopelessly lost, and trying not to trip over scooters. the souks are insane. like, seriously, a labyrinth of tiny shops crammed with…stuff. i bought a ridiculously ornate ceramic bowl - probably going to use it as a plant stand - and a pair of leather sandals that are already falling apart. it’s a vibe.

i stumbled across this amazing little courtyard cafe - "Cafe des Epices" - it’s tucked away behind a crumbling wall and has the most incredible orange trees. the owner, a guy named Omar, keeps offering me dates and telling me stories about his family. he’s a total character.

*gear list (because i’m a professional, obviously):
water bottle (essential)
sunscreen (seriously, don’t be a fool)
comfortable shoes (you’ll be walking a lot)
a phrasebook (moroccan arabic is…challenging)
a portable charger (because, you know, battery life)
* a healthy dose of skepticism

i’m trying to find a decent place to stay that isn’t a glorified hostel. i checked out a few options on TripAdvisor, but everything seems either ridiculously expensive or suspiciously basic. maybe i’ll just sleep in the medina tonight. it’s probably safer than some of the hotels.

if you get bored, Casablanca is just a short drive away. i heard that the Hassan II Mosque is worth a visit - apparently, it’s built right on the coast.

someone told me that the best way to experience Marrakech is to get lost. and honestly, they’re probably right. i’m starting to think that’s exactly what i’ve been doing. i’m seriously considering just staying here forever and learning how to make tagine. or maybe just buying more ceramic bowls.

i’m heading to Jemaa el-Fnaa square later - apparently, it’s a crazy spectacle at night with food stalls and musicians. i’m both excited and terrified.

i’m also trying to find a good place to get a proper coffee. i need something strong to counteract the mint tea. i found a place called "Black & White" - it looks promising, but i’m not holding my breath.

i’m seriously considering starting a blog about my travels. or maybe just documenting my descent into madness. either way, wish me luck.
