Düsseldorf: Damp Socks and Unexpected Kindness

okay, so düsseldorf. it wasn't on the list, honestly. i was supposed to be in berlin, chasing down a rumor about a vintage synth auction, but the train situation…let’s just say it involved a very stressed conductor and a lot of apologies. ended up here. and honestly? it’s kinda growing on me.

i just checked and it’s… persistently drizzling, which is putting it mildly. it’s the kind of damp that seeps into your soul and makes you question all your life choices. the temperature’s hovering around eight degrees, but feels like someone’s gently frosting your nose. humidity is practically a solid, you could cut it with a knife. pressure’s normal, i guess, which is good. don’t need any exploding heads on top of everything else.

i’m a freelance photographer, mostly shooting gigs and portraits, but i’m always on the lookout for interesting light. düsseldorf has…a certain mood. it’s not bright and cheerful, it’s more…brooding. the *Rhine is a constant presence, grey and powerful. i spent a good chunk of yesterday wandering around the Altstadt (Old Town), trying to capture it. it’s a bit touristy, yeah, but there’s a charm to the narrow streets and wonky buildings.

someone told me that the brewery tours are a
must, but also that you’ll end up singing sea shanties with a bunch of strangers. i haven’t braved that yet. i did, however, stumble into a tiny little cafe near Königsallee and had the most amazing Kaffee mit Sahne. seriously, the coffee here is on another level. if you’re a coffee snob like me, check out this place: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Coffee%20Shops&find_loc=D%C3%BCsseldorf.

“Don’t trust anyone who offers you Altbier before noon. They’re testing you.”

that’s what the guy at the camera shop told me. apparently, it’s a local tradition to judge newcomers based on their beer-drinking habits. i’m sticking to coffee for now.

the neighbors here are…quiet. not unfriendly, just reserved. if you get bored, cologne and essen are just a quick train ride away. i overheard someone complaining about the parking situation - apparently, it’s a nightmare. also, someone warned me about pickpockets around the
Hauptbahnhof* (main train station), so keep your wits about you. you can find more info on the city's official tourism site: https://www.duesseldorf-travel.de/.

i’ve been trying to find some interesting street art, but it’s proving elusive. mostly just graffiti tags, which is a shame. i did find a cool little record store though, called https://www.discogs.com/store/10419/Space-Hall-Records. spent a good hour digging through vinyl.

i’m starting to think this unplanned detour was a good thing. it’s not the glamorous adventure i was expecting, but it’s…real. it’s messy. it’s damp socks and unexpected kindness. and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need. i'm thinking of checking out the NRW-Forum, a center for contemporary art, tomorrow. https://www.nrw-forum.de/en/
