dripping in humidity: a slow wander through passa-fundo
the air here is thick enough to chew. stepping off the bus, it's like walking into a warm, wet blanket. 22.59°c but feels like 23.31°c, humidity at 92%. i just checked and it's basically a steam room out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the kind of heat that makes your shirt stick to your back before you even find your hostel. i'm sitting on a bench near the main square, fanning myself with a map, wondering why i thought a midday arrival was a good idea. the locals don't seem bothered, moving slow like syrup, which is honestly the only way to move here.
i heard from a guy at the bus station that the best acai in town is at a little hole-in-the-wall called *acai do zé. apparently he's been blending the same recipe since the '80s. i haven't tried it yet, but it's on the list. someone else told me the river walk at sunset is the only time the temperature drops below sweat-inducing. i'll believe it when i feel it. if you get bored, patos and campina grande are just a short drive away, though why you'd want to leave this sticky paradise is beyond me.
the pressure's holding at 1011, but you can feel the weight of the air anyway. everything moves slower here, conversations stretch out, meals linger. i had lunch at a place called churrascaria do manoel* where the meat kept coming until i begged for mercy. the waiter just laughed and brought more. it's that kind of place. no one's in a hurry, except maybe the mosquitoes, which are on a mission. if you're coming, bring repellent and a very loose schedule. and maybe a handheld fan, or just accept that you'll be damp for a while.
