Chennai Chaos & Coconut Dreams: A Drummer's Dispatch
okay, so chennai. where do i even begin? i’m still buzzing, honestly. just wrapped up a gig with a local band - seriously wild stuff, a fusion of Carnatic music and… well, let’s just say it involved a lot of frantic cymbal crashes and a sitar. my ears are still ringing a little, but in a good way.
I’m a touring session drummer, you see. Been bouncing around for, like, fifteen years now. Chennai was… different. Not bad, just… intense. The heat, for starters. I just checked and it’s shimmering off the pavement like a mirage out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. Seriously, my sticks practically melted in my hands. I’m used to sweaty gigs, but this was next level.
I stayed in Mylapore, which was a good call. It’s got this amazing, ancient vibe. The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is… wow. Just wow. I’m not usually one for temples, but this one… the colors, the carvings, the sheer scale of it all. I spent a good chunk of an afternoon just wandering around, trying to soak it all in. Food. Oh, the food. I ate my weight in dosas. Seriously. Every. Single. Day. And idlis. And sambar. And… I could go on. I found this little place near my guesthouse - it was just a hole-in-the-wall, really - but the food was incredible. I overheard a drunk guy at the next table telling his friend, “Don’t even think about ordering anything else, just stick with the masala dosa. It’s the only thing that matters.” He seemed pretty serious about it.
Speaking of locals, they were… interesting. Everyone’s so polite, but there’s this underlying energy, you know? Like everyone’s got a story to tell. I spent one evening chatting with a guy who runs a tea stall. He told me about the history of the area, about the fishing communities, about the political tensions. It was fascinating. He also warned me about the auto-rickshaw drivers. “They’ll rip you off if you let them,” he said, with a knowing smile. “Always negotiate the price before you get in.” Solid advice.
I also stumbled across a really cool vintage clothing shop in T Nagar. It was crammed full of saris and kurtas and old Bollywood posters. I picked up a few things - nothing too crazy, just a couple of scarves and a funky embroidered jacket. If you’re into that kind of thing, check out this local board for more shops: https://www.thebetterindia.com/114999/best-vintage-clothing-stores-chennai/.
Someone told me that the traffic is insane. Like, truly insane. And they weren’t kidding. It’s a constant, chaotic ballet of cars, buses, scooters, and pedestrians. I almost got run over three times. But somehow, it all works. It’s just… a different kind of order.
If you get bored, Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram are just a short drive away. I didn’t have time to get out there this trip, but I’ve heard good things. I’m already planning my return.
Oh, and the weather data? It’s currently 39.25 degrees, feels like 37.57, pressure is 1005, and humidity is a breezy 17%. So, yeah, hot. Very hot.
I’m heading to Bangalore next. Wish me luck. I hear the drumming scene there is even wilder. You can find some reviews of Bangalore’s music venues on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=music+venues&find_loc=Bangalore,+Karnataka.
Until next time… keep the beat alive!
