Chaotic Days in a Forgotten French Corner
so i rolled into this tiny place after a 6-hour train ride that felt like it would never end. the station was basically a shed with a clock that’s five minutes slow. i just checked and it’s 4°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air smelled like damp stone and someone’s forgotten cigarette, and i loved it instantly.
first stop: the local bakery. the lady behind the counter looked at me like i’d just asked for her firstborn. i got a croissant that crumbled everywhere and a coffee that burned my tongue. worth it. someone told me that the best boulangerie is actually three streets over, but by then i was too lazy to move.
walking around felt like stepping into a black-and-white film. cobblestones, lace curtains, a cat that ignored me completely. i heard that the old clock tower chimes twice at noon-once for the living, once for the dead. spooky, right?
if you get bored, reims and laon are just a short drive away. but honestly, i’d rather sit in this square with my notebook and pretend i’m writing the next great french novel.
later i ended up in a bar where the bartender’s name was jean-pierre and he had opinions about everything. “you americans,” he said, shaking his head. “you come here for what? the baguettes? the wine? the existential dread?” i laughed so hard i almost dropped my drink.
this place isn’t trying to be anything it’s not. no flashy signs, no tourist traps. just quiet streets, good bread, and the kind of charm that sneaks up on you when you’re not looking. maybe that’s why i stayed an extra day. or maybe i just couldn’t face another train ride yet.
want more sleepy-town vibes? check out reims tourism or laon history if you’re into medieval stuff.
