Chandigarh Chronicles: Dust, Dosa, and Dodgy Rickshaw Drivers
okay, so. chandigarh. i’m still kinda buzzing, honestly. i just got back and my brain feels like a tangled ball of yarn someone’s been using to knit a very confused sweater. i’m a touring session drummer, you see, and my agent just dropped me into this gig - a corporate retreat for some tech bros. the music was…fine. but the city? whoa.
I’m not gonna lie, the first few hours were a bit of a shock. i’m used to dimly lit clubs and the smell of stale beer, not…this. It’s clean, almost aggressively so. Like someone scrubbed the entire place with industrial-strength bleach. i just checked and it’s hovering around twenty-three degrees, feels like twenty-two. pretty consistent, actually. not exactly scorching, but definitely not freezing. humidity’s low, which is a win for my hair, let’s be real.
I spent most of my free time wandering. Got hopelessly lost, naturally. The architecture is…interesting. A lot of concrete, a lot of wide avenues. It’s got this planned feel, you know? Like someone drew it up on a giant grid. I stumbled across this amazing little dosa place - seriously, the best I’ve had outside of Chennai. It was called something unpronounceable, but the guy running it just smiled and nodded when I pointed. Check out the reviews on TripAdvisor https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g319723-Chandigarh.html - apparently, it’s a local institution.
Speaking of locals… the rickshaw drivers. Oh. My. God. They’re… enthusiastic. Someone told me that you have to haggle, and like, really haggle. Like, start at a quarter of what they’re asking. I didn’t. I paid way too much to get across town. Lesson learned. I saw a couple of guys arguing over a parking spot - full-on shouting match. It was… entertaining, in a chaotic sort of way.
I also spent an afternoon exploring Sector 17 market. It’s a bit touristy, but still worth a look. Found a few vintage shops - nothing amazing, but decent. I’m always on the lookout for a good band tee. Yelp https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=vintage+clothing&find_loc=Chandigarh%2C+India has a few listings, but honestly, just wandering around is the best way to find the hidden gems.
I overheard some gossip at a chai stall - apparently, there’s a really cool street art scene developing in some of the less-touristy areas. I didn’t have time to track it down, but it’s definitely on my list for next time. A local warned me about the traffic, said it’s “a special kind of madness.” He wasn’t wrong. Seriously, watch out for scooters. They’re everywhere.
If you get bored, Panchkula and Mohali are just a short drive away. They’re smaller towns, a bit quieter. I didn’t make it out there, but I heard they have some nice parks. I spent most of my time just soaking up the…vibe. It’s hard to describe. It’s not like anywhere else I’ve been. It’s got this weird mix of modern and traditional, chaos and calm. It’s… compelling.
Oh! And the pressure is 1007, ground level 985. Doesn’t mean much to me, but hey, here’s your data. You’re welcome.
I’m already planning a return trip. Maybe I’ll even try to learn a few phrases in Hindi. Or at least how to properly haggle with a rickshaw driver. Check out this forum for more Chandigarh tips https://www.indiamike.com/india/chandigarh-forum.
Okay, gotta go. My laundry pile is mocking me. And I need more chai.
