Cebu City Vibes: Drumming Through the Heat and Chaos

okay so i landed in cebu city and immediately felt the humidity slap me like a wet towel. it's 27°c but feels like 29.65°c, so basically your shirt is damp before you even step out of the airport. the air's thick with that tropical pressure-1011 hPa, humidity at 77%-like breathing through a warm sponge. but honestly? that's part of the charm. or torture. depends on your tolerance for sweat.

i'm here as a touring session drummer, which means my "sightseeing" usually involves sprinting from gig to gig with a cymbal bag slung over one shoulder and a half-eaten empanada in the other. cebu's traffic is its own genre of chaos-motorbikes weaving like water, jeepneys painted brighter than a pride parade, and the occasional stray dog that looks like it's late for a meeting. someone told me that the best way to get around is by habal-habal (motorcycle taxi), but i heard that's also the fastest way to question your life choices. still, i tried it. once. never again.

food here is a whole other story. i stumbled into a karinderya near colon street after soundcheck, and the adobo was so good i almost dropped a stick mid-song. rumor has it the best lechon is at cn tower, but i didn't make it there-too busy chasing down a drum key someone "borrowed" from my kit. if you're into street food, check out the carbon public market; just bring wet wipes and a strong stomach.

the gigs themselves? wild. one night, the power cut out mid-set, and we kept playing acoustically while the crowd clapped along with their phones' flashlights. felt like a scene from a movie, except i was dripping sweat onto my snare and questioning every career decision that led me here. but that's the beauty of it-cebu doesn't care about your plans. it drags you into its rhythm and dares you to keep up.

if you get bored, bohol and negros are just a short ferry ride away. i didn't make it this trip, but i heard the chocolate hills are worth the detour-someone said they look like giant maltesers, which, honestly, is the only review i trust.

anyway, here's a map so you don't end up lost like i did trying to find a 7/11 at 2am:

and because no travel post is complete without photos that make you question your life choices, here's what cebu looked like through my blurry, sleep-deprived lens:

silhouette of trees during sunset

a statue in the middle of a forest

a close up of a flower with a blurry background

so yeah, cebu city: hot, loud, and utterly unforgettable. bring extra shirts, a sense of humor, and maybe a drum key. you'll need all three.
