bobo-dioulasso: when the air feels like a wet towel
so i’m squatting in some random internet café in bobo-dioulasso, wiping sweat off my lens and trying not to short-circuit my camera gear. i just checked the weather and it’s currently feeling like a blast furnace wrapped in wet paper, so pack light if you’re coming. this humidity is no joke-it’s like walking around inside a person’s mouth after a hot meal. the locals seem unfazed, but my Canon is definitely wheezing.
the city’s a beautiful mess of crumbling colonial walls and sudden bursts of magenta bougainvillea spilling over mud-brick walls. i’ve been hunting for light like a madman-dodging goats, nearly got run over by a moto-taxi driver who clearly thought stop signs were suggestions. captured this insane old dude braiding fishing nets by the river at dawn, his hands moving like he’s playing a piano only he can hear.
if you’ve exhausted bobo’s dusty charms, ouaga’s just a bumpy bus ride away for the Grand Mosque’s hypnotic minarets. but honestly? bobo’s got its own rhythm. i overheard some drunk guys at a maquis bar warning me that the central market’s “only for locals after 3pm unless you wanna be part of a human stampede.” also heard whispers that the best mangoes in west Africa hide in some grandma’s stall near the train bridge-apparently she’ll only sell ‘em if you can out-bargain her. good luck with that.
my gear’s holding up fine, but my sanity? questionable. shot 300 frames yesterday trying to get the afternoon light hitting that *old mosque*-the way it turns the stone gold for like 12 seconds. worth the heatstroke. for real.
