belo horizonte: where broke meets brilliant

okay so i landed in belo horizonte with exactly reais to my name and zero regrets. this city? it’s like someone crammed a jungle into a concrete blender and hit puree. i just checked the weather - that sticky 23°C with 73% humidity? yeah, it’s the kind of damp heat that makes your t-shirt cling like a second skin. bring a spare, or don’t. your call.

belo horizonte cityscape at dusk

first stop: pampulha neighborhood. that *lagoa da pampulha is unreal - like someone dropped a postcard in the middle of the city. but here’s the thing: the locals treat it like their living room. picnics, frisbee, dudes selling homemade açaí. you’ll blend right in if you’re not wearing a suit. which i wasn’t. obviously.

“skip the tourist traps near praça da liberdade. real magic’s in the street art alleys behind the market. bring bandaids though.”

someone told me the best pastel (fried pastry) spot is a tiny stall near the train station. they weren’t lying. reais for a cheese overload that’ll make you question your life choices in the best way. also heard
mercado central is a sensory overload - spices, knockoff shoes, and dudes yelling about weird fruits. avoid the ‘exotic’ juice unless you’ve got a death wish.

“if you see a guy selling ‘guaraná straight from amazon’, run. it’s just soda with a sob story.”

when your hostel wifi dies (it will), wander towards
parque municipal*. that forest canopy? legit escapes. free entrance. oxygen included. and if you get bored, ouro preto’s a bus ride away - colonial gold vibes minus the crowds.

pro-tip for broke folks: the university area has late-night cheap eats. rice, beans, and mystery meat for under reais. don’t ask what’s in the stew. just eat it.

for more budget hacks, check this hostel guide. and if you crave validation, tripadvisor’s top picks are here.

this city doesn’t care about your wallet. it cares about your weird. bring the weird.
