a broke student's freezing, chaotic weekend in tinton falls, nj

so i impulsively booked a megabus to tinton falls, nj, with my last twenty bucks. no plan, just a name from a cheap travel blog. big mistake? maybe. but it's an adventure.

first, the weather: i just stepped outside and it's 0.54°c, but feels like -3.33°c? humidity 93% - my glasses fog up every time i breathe. pressure's 1018 mb, whatever that means. it's damp cold, like the air is made of mist. i'm wearing every layer i own, and i still feel it in my bones.

i headed to the shore. it's not pretty right now - grey water, leafless trees, but there's a stark beauty. i sat on a bench and ate a gas station sandwich. a local walking a short-coated black dog told me to check out the 'hidden beach' around the corner. it's a small cove with sand, all covered in frost. took a photo, it's majestic in a desolate way.

as a budget student, i'm all about free or cheap stuff. the public library is my holy grail - free wifi, heat, and quiet. i camped there for hours, planning my next move. i read on tripadvisor [tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g59491-i13584-k3898208-Budget_Travel_Tinton_Falls] that some people complain about the library's hours, but it was open late for me.

for food, i found 'deli on main' via yelp [yelp.com/biz/deli-on-main-tinton-falls]. huge portions, fair prices. the pastrami sandwich was $8 and feeds two. i also discovered that the local diner does $5 coffee refills all day - life saver.

neighbors: if tinton feels too quiet, asbury park is a short bus ride away - $2.25 with the day pass. asbury's got a reputation for being artsy and lively. i heard from a bartender that it's getting gentrified, but still has grit. long branch is closer, with a nice downtown for window shopping. red bank's a train ride and has expensive cafes, but the bookstores are free to browse.

reviews as gossip: in the laundromat, a woman warned me about 'seafood shack' on route 35. 'overpriced and the fish is frozen,' she said. but i tried it - $22 for fish and chips, portion was small, but tasty. another rumor: the park by the marina has free yoga in summer and sometimes concerts. i checked a local events calendar [jerseyshoreevents.com] and it's true. too bad i'm here in winter.

accommodation: i stayed at 'budget stays hostel' - $25/night, shared bathroom. the owner gave me a student discount after i showed my id. always ask! it's a dorm-style room, but clean and warm. i met other travelers who said the same: tinton falls is a hidden gem for cheap stays.

weather's still crap: 0.5°c, feels like -3.33°c, humidity 93%. but i'm embracing it. the cold makes everything feel clearer. i walked for miles, saw white flowers blooming in the park - like a miracle in the frost. that's the photo above.

if you're coming, pack thermals, check the weather daily, and talk to locals. they're full of gossip and tips. i learned that the pressure is 1018 mb, which means stable weather, but it might change. also, sea level pressure is same - so no storms soon, apparently.

total cost for two days: $50 including transport, food, hostel. not bad for a winter getaway. tinton falls, you were cold, weird, and oddly charming. i'd come back in summer to see the shore alive.
