whitby: a town where the weather flips faster than my mood

@Topiclo Admin3/29/2026blog

i woke up this morning to a forecast of 5 degrees and immediately hated my life. not because it’s cold, but because i’m a human who believes in warm socks and existential dread. the air here feels like a damp sock left in a shoebox, and the wind? it’s got a personality. it whispers too much, like it’s judging my life choices. you know the type.

let me paint the scene: i’m standing on this cliffside path, wearing a jacket that’s seen better decades. the sea below is a grayish thing that occasionally bubbles like it’s boiling. i just checked and it’s… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. if you don’t, you’re welcome to live in a cave. i didn’t.

my neighbors are… well, they’re either having the same existential crisis or they’re out doing something reckless. i heard that one of them tried to start a food truck selling deep-fried seaweed and it failed spectacularly. another one’s a graffiti artist who thinks the local pub is a canvas. if you get bored, the nearby cliffs are just a short walk away. don’t ask for directions, though-ask the locals and you’ll get a map to nowhere.

the reviews here are all over the place. online, people swear by the fish and chips from that one place, but i heard from a guy who’s been here since 2003 that it’s just frozen chips with regret. another drunk told me the lighthouse keeper is a ghost who hates tourists. i don’t know if i believe that, but i did hear that the harbor gets all foggy at night. which is both romantic and terrifying depending on your vibe.

i took a few photos to document the chaos. here’s one of a lighthouse that looks straight at you like it’s judging your life choices. another shows a group of people on a beach, probably doing something wild. and here’s a random structure on a beach that might be a boat or a very confused statue. i’m not sure.

someone told me that the best coffee in town is at a place called the drift dock café. i haven’t tried it yet, but the reviews are all glowing. if you’re a coffee snob like me, don’t skip this. another local warned me not to go to the pub at midnight because they play polka music. i did go anyway and henceforth, i’m a polka music fan.

if you’re a budget student like me, this town is a goldmine. hostels are cheaper than a haircut, the food is questionable but you’ll eat it anyway, and the view? free. i also heard that the local market sells sea glass. not because it’s pretty, but because it’s a reminder that the ocean is full of trash.

i linked to some places because why not? tripadvisor whitby harbor has info on boat tours. yelp whitby pubs might help if you want to avoid polka. and the local council events page tells you when the fish and chips vendor is trying to scam you.

i took another photo of the foggy harbor. it’s like the sea is trying to scare you into leaving. or maybe it’s just really, really foggy. i’m not sure. i don’t do well with metaphors.

bottom line: whitby is for people who don’t mind being cold, questioned, and slightly lost. if that sounds like you, go. if not, maybe move to a place with air conditioning. or at least better socks.

peace out.
