Tōkai Road Trip: Rain, Ramen, and Random Encounters

it's 2am and i'm sitting in a 24-hour ramen shop in tōkai, staring at the steam rising from my bowl like it's some kind of mystical portal. the numbers 6698269 and 1392703321? no clue what they mean-maybe coordinates to a secret noodle stash, maybe just random digits from a half-remembered dream. but here i am, typing this on my phone with shaky fingers because the broth is that good.

i just checked the weather and it's 10.3°c right now, but feels like 8.56°c because the wind keeps sneaking through the cracks in this old building. the humidity's at 45%, which means my hair is doing that weird frizzy thing it does when it's confused about whether it's summer or winter. perfect ramen weather, honestly.

if you get bored, nagoya and shizuoka are just a short drive away-though "short" in japan might mean "pack a snack and download a podcast." nagoya's got that giant castle and shizuoka's all about the green tea, but tōkai? tōkai's got soul. or at least, it's got me sitting here at 2am writing about it.

i heard from a guy at the counter-let's call him ramen-ronin-that the best time to visit is during the autumn festival when they close off main street and everyone dances like nobody's watching. except everyone's watching. it's japan. someone's always watching.

"the secret ingredient is regret," he said, stirring his own bowl. "and maybe a little garlic. but mostly regret."

*local tip: don't ask for extra noodles unless you're ready to commit. these folks take their portions seriously. also, if you're into vintage finds, there's a little shop three blocks down that sells everything from Showa-era magazines to questionable taxidermy. i bought a ceramic cat that looks mildly disappointed with life-fits right in with my aesthetic.

for places to stay, check out
booking.com or agoda.com* if you want something reliable. if you're feeling adventurous, there's always the capsule hotels-like sleeping in a space-age coffin, but with free toiletries and less existential dread than you'd expect.

i'm gonna finish this ramen and probably order another because when the universe gives you perfect noodles at 2am, you don't question it. you just slurp. and maybe write a slightly incoherent blog post about it.

p.s. if anyone knows what 6698269 means, slide into my DMs. i'm genuinely curious now.
