São José dos Campos: Where Rain and Rats Make Great Photos
a large building sitting on top of a lush green hillside

okay so i’m sitting here in this café in são josé dos Campos trying to dry off my camera gear again. i swear the humidity here is 81% and it’s been clinging to everything like a clingy ex-partner. *clouds just keep rolling in and dumping this persistent drizzle that’s perfect for moody shots but terrible for keeping my lenses fog-free. i just checked the weather station and it’s currently 14.5°C but feels like 14.15 - basically the kind of damp chill that makes your bones ache and your camera batteries die faster than a cheap watch battery. hope you brought thermals.

A hillside town is densely packed with houses.

so yesterday i was stalking this abandoned warehouse on the outskirts because someone told me the graffiti there was next-level. and then i heard from a local bartender that the police don’t really patrol that area after dark - which is both terrifying and great for authenticity. but then i also overheard at this hole-in-the-wall taco place that the neighborhood rats have become street art celebrities, apparently they’re even named by locals. who knew rodents could be cultural icons? anyway, if you get bored shooting generic cityscapes, campinas is just a short drive away - totally different vibe with more colonial architecture.

“mate, if you’re gonna try that rooftop bar near the old train station, go before 7pm or the fog rolls in and you can’t see squat. also, tell your buddy i said thanks for the last rolls of film.”
Cozy brick cottage with plants in the garden.

and you know what’s wild? i found this tiny café run by this guy who roasts his own beans and he says the pressure’s been weird lately - 1019 hpa but fluctuating like a dial-up modem. apparently it affects how the humidity clings to everything. he also warned me about this spot near the university where students have been leaving weird offerings to the weather gods. might be worth a shot for some surreal compositions. oh and i found this forum thread where people are complaining about the ground-level pressure reading being only 881 hpa - something about altitude tricks? beats me but it makes for cool mist effects at dawn.

“bro, skip the touristy botanical gardens. head to the outskirts where the eucalyptus groves are - the light breaks through the fog like stained glass. but bring bug spray, the mosquitos are savage.”

anyway, if you’re planning to come, check out this local photographer’s critique of the best spots, and this foodie thread for the taco place i mentioned. the dude makes killer salsa verde*.

ps. if you see a gray rat with a missing tail near that warehouse, tell him ‘raphael’ said hi. he owes me a shot.
