Sleep-Deprived Drum Solos in Cagayan de Oro’s Street Corners

@Topiclo Admin3/24/2026blog

woke up this morning to the sound of a chorus drill echoing outside my tiny apartment. wasn't sure what was happening until i checked the street views-locals were setting up for some kind of street fair. 26.68 degrees feels like a sauna at this point, but the humidity’s got that 86% magic to make you sweat in style. if you’re here for vibes, maybe grab a cold drink from the street vendor who’s been playing that same bossa nova loop since dawn.

last night i snapped a photo of that giant palm tree near the market square-it looked like it was holding a sign that said "best manananggal at 7pm, don’t ask questions. didn’t ask. went anyway. it was a disaster. my dm’s still at me saying, why’d you eat one that looked like a melted popsicle? if you get bored, manila’s just a short drive away. heard that one dive shop near the airport is serving halo-halo in a clay pot. seems legit?(probably not. went anyway.)

someone told me that the yelp reviews for this market are wild-some say the tamarind candies are fake, others swear they taste like tears. didn’t know i needed that kind of advice until yesterday when i got stuck in traffic and the vendor’s rant about the government shut down the booth made so much sense.

i just checked and it's 29.51 outside right now, hope you don’t mind it. the air smells like wet concrete and burned coconut. weird combo? yeah. works for me.

oh yeah, and the neighbor who runs the 24-hour halo-halo stall? he’s been knocking on my door at 3 a.m. claiming his machine’s ghost is yelling about sugar shortages. haven’t slept since. facebook group called Cagayan Gossip has more details about this "spiritual halo-halo crisis" (link: therealhalo-haloforum.com)

p.s. if you’re into chaos, check out this independent drummer’s page. he’s playing a show tomorrow-no ticket, just bring your 500 in pesos and a willingness to dance to random keystrokes. (link: maninder.vc)
