Shooting in Seabrook: An Indie Scout's Unexpected Weekend
so i was in seabrook last weekend, completely unplanned, and ended up falling for this place. sometimes the best shoots come when you're not looking for them, you know? the light was just...right, and the town had this vibe that i couldn't shake off.
i just checked and it's...a perfect 22°C with that dry air that makes everything feel crisp, hope you like that kind of thing. humidity was 43%, which for someone who carries camera equipment around is a godsend. no sweaty lenses, no fogged up viewfinders. just pure, clear shooting conditions that make my heart do a little happy dance.
the town itself is this weird mix of old fishing docks and modern art installations. i spent most of my time at the *old pier, which has been converted into this open-air cinema during summer. the owner, a guy named marco with a beard that could hide small birds, told me they show indie flicks every tuesday night. free admission. i mean, how's that for a find? someone told me that marco used to be a film producer in la before coming here to 'find his sanity.' don't know if it's true, but it sounds exactly like something a burnt-out producer would do.
i stayed at this place called 'the driftwood inn' - cheap, clean, and with the most peculiar decor that seemed to be collected from various film sets. the owner, a woman who looked like she'd walked straight out of a bergman film, gave me a discount because i told her i was scouting locations. she said i could use the communal kitchen* anytime, which was clutch because i brought my own groceries. heard a rumor that the kitchen's been featured in three different cooking shows, but who knows if that's true or just her way of making me feel special.
there's this coffee shop called 'frame and focus' that's basically a paradise for someone like me. they have a small projection room where you can watch old films while sipping ridiculously expensive coffee. the barista, a guy named leo with more tattoos than sense, told me they're having a 'scavenger hunt' next week where you have to find hidden film references around town. said the prize is a weekend pass to the local film festival. might just have to come back for that.
if you get bored, coastal haven and harbor point are just a short drive away. harbor point has this abandoned theater that's supposedly haunted, which is perfect for my next project about ghost towns and forgotten dreams. someone told me that the theater's last showing was of a film that flopped so badly the director moved to another country. not sure if that's true, but it makes for a good story, right?
the food scene here is surprisingly good for a town this size. tried this place called 'the reel deal' - small, unassuming, but their seafood pasta is to die for. the chef, a woman who looks like she'd rather be anywhere else but there, told me she used to work in michelin-starred restaurants but moved here because 'the ocean called her name.' whatever that means. heard from a local that she's actually hiding from some mob boss back in new york. again, not sure if it's true, but it makes eating her food feel a little more dangerous, which is always a plus.
overall, seabrook is this weird, wonderful place that's caught somewhere between a time warp and a dream. it's got the charm of a small town with enough quirky characters and hidden gems to keep me coming back. might even pitch it to my producer as the next indie hotspot. if they don't bite, i'll just come back and shoot it myself. because some places are just meant to be on film, you know?
check out the local tourism board for more info: seabrook tourism.
and if you're looking for food recommendations, yelp's seabrook page has all the spots worth checking out.
don't forget to check out the seabrook film festival if you're in town during october, and if you need camera gear, coastal camera rentals has everything you might need for indie shoots on a budget.
