San Francisco Static: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. the time difference is a monster. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 1020 pressure, 60 humidity - feels like stepping into a slightly damp sponge. the air smells like salt and something vaguely metallic, which is…consistent, i guess?
I landed in San Francisco yesterday, and honestly, it’s a sensory overload. Like, a beautiful, chaotic, slightly unsettling sensory overload. I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb in the Mission - it’s basically a closet with a bed, but the location is prime. I’m talking steps from a phenomenal ramen place and a bodega that sells everything from kombucha to vintage postcards.
I was trying to find a decent coffee shop, and someone told me that “The Wandering Bean” on Valencia Street is the real deal. Apparently, they roast their own beans and have a barista named Silas who can make you a latte that will change your life. I’m skeptical, but desperate. https://www.thewanderingbean.com/
Spent the afternoon wandering around *North Beach, dodging cable cars and trying to decipher the local slang. It’s a weird mix of Beatnik nostalgia and tech bros. I overheard a group of guys arguing about the best sourdough - seriously, it’s a thing here. Someone also mentioned that the Golden Gate Bridge is best viewed at sunset, but honestly, I’m too tired to deal with crowds. I’m aiming for a 3 am view, if i can manage it. https://www.goldengate.org/
My gear list is a disaster, as usual. Let’s see… my battered Roland 808, a ridiculously oversized backpack, a half-empty bottle of hand sanitizer, and a collection of mismatched socks. Essentials, right? I also brought my sketchbook - gotta capture the weirdness. https://www.amazon.com/Roland-808-Drum-Machine-Black/dp/B0006X7986
Speaking of weird, I stumbled upon a street art installation in Haight-Ashbury that looked like a giant, melting ice cream cone. It was… unsettling. And beautiful, in a deeply unsettling way. I heard that the artist is a local legend named “Pixel Dust” - apparently, he only works at night and uses glow-in-the-dark paint. https://www.haightashbury.org/
I’m trying to find a decent place to eat that isn’t just overpriced sourdough. Yelp says there’s a Burmese place in the Richmond District called “Little Burma” that’s worth checking out. https://www.yelp.com/ I’m also desperately seeking a laundromat. My socks are starting to revolt.
If you get bored, Oakland is just a short drive away. It’s a whole different vibe - grittier, more artsy, and definitely more interesting. I’m thinking of heading over there tomorrow.
Okay, I need more coffee. Seriously. And maybe a nap. This city is exhausting. I’m pretty sure I saw a guy dressed as a giant banana earlier. San Francisco, you’re a trip.
Pro-Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking. Don’t trust anyone offering you a “free” tour. Bring a rain jacket. Seriously. Look up the bus schedule. It’s a labyrinth. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t try to parallel park a car here.*
I heard that the best way to experience San Francisco is to just get lost. I’m embracing that strategy. Wish me luck.
