rambling through a forgotten corner of kent
you ever just end up somewhere because the train stopped and you didn't get off in time? yeah. that was me. ended up in this little seaside blip called ramsgate, and honestly? i'm glad i stayed. not because it's shiny or perfect-it's not. but because it's got that weird, salty charm that tourist towns lose after a few decades of overdevelopment.
i just checked and it's 9°C and kinda breezy there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the kind where you need a decent jacket but can still sit outside with a coffee if you're stubborn. i was that person.
ramsgate's not trying to be dover or margate. it's just... there. a working harbor with fishing boats, some sad-looking arcades, and a cliff-top promenade that's seen better days. but that's the charm. i walked past a fish and chip shop where the owner yelled at a seagull like it owed him money. i liked that.
"if you're after a 'real' seaside town, this is it,"
said a guy in a pub i ducked into to warm up. he had a kentish accent so thick i could barely understand him, but i nodded like i did.
if you get bored, margate and broadstairs are just a short drive away, but honestly? i'd stay here. the architecture's a bit grand in places-like someone built a regency spa town and forgot to market it. there's a church on the hill with a view that makes the whole place look like a diorama. and the marina? quiet. no frills. just boats bobbing and the smell of diesel and salt.
i heard that the tunnels under the town were used during ww2, and some locals do spooky night tours if you're into that kind of thing. i wasn't brave enough, but i overheard two girls in a cafƩ talking about it like it was the town's best-kept secret.
would i come back? yeah. but not for the sights. for the quiet. for the feeling that you've stumbled into somewhere that's still figuring itself out. and for the fish and chips that don't try to be anything other than exactly what they are.
