Rainy Days and Rusty Gears in Bend, Oregon

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 6053154 and 1124321200… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a broken drum loop. i landed in Bend yesterday, and it’s… well, it’s Bend. Lots of bikes, lots of craft beer, and a persistent drizzle that feels like someone’s perpetually weeping. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

I’m staying in this tiny Airbnb - seriously, it’s basically a glorified shed - but the wifi is surprisingly decent. The guy who owns it, Silas, he’s a session drummer, which is… fascinating. He keeps talking about ‘ghost notes’ and ‘pocketing’ and i’m just nodding along, trying to look like i understand. He also gave me this weird warning about the *Old Mill District - something about ‘shadows’ and ‘lost souls.’ Probably just trying to sell me a tour, but you never know.

I spent the afternoon wandering around the Deschutes River. It’s kinda muddy, honestly, but the reflections are pretty wild. I grabbed a burrito from a place called
Sizzle Stick - it was… an experience. Let’s just say the salsa had a lot of heat. I overheard a drunk guy at the bar telling someone that “the river spirits are restless tonight,” which, you know, totally added to the vibe.

Speaking of vibes, the locals are… chill. Like, aggressively chill. Everyone’s wearing flannel and has a dog. It’s a whole thing. I tried to strike up a conversation with a guy selling handmade wooden spoons - he just stared at me for a solid minute before saying, "Appreciate the hustle." I felt like i was in a Wes Anderson movie, but with more rain.

I’m trying to find some decent gear for exploring. Here’s the breakdown:

*Waterproof Boots: Absolutely essential. Seriously, don’t even think about it. I’m eyeing these at REI - around $150. Worth it.
*Rain Jacket: Duh. Something breathable, not like a plastic tarp. Saw a sweet one at a vintage shop downtown - maybe $40.
*Headlamp: For those ‘shadows’ Silas warned me about. And general nighttime wandering. $25.
*Camera: Obviously. My trusty Sony Alpha 6000. It’s seen better days, but it still kicks ass.

I found this little gem of a place called
The Wanderer’s Brew - it’s a coffee shop with a ridiculously extensive selection of beans. They have a pour-over bar, which is a godsend. I’m currently nursing a dark roast and contemplating my life choices. Check it out: https://www.thewanderersbrew.com/

Someone told me that the
Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is the best place to watch the sunset, but it’s supposed to be crowded. I’m debating whether to brave the masses. Maybe not. I’m feeling a bit… introspective today.

I heard that the
Deschutes Brewery has some amazing flights, but the lines are insane. I might try to go later, if I can stomach the crowds. Yelp says it’s worth it: https://www.yelp.com/biz/deschutes-brewery-bend

If you get bored,
Smith Rock State Park is just a short drive away. Apparently, it’s a mecca for climbers. I’m not a climber, but I’m definitely going to check it out. It’s a beautiful area, even in the rain.

Okay, last thing. Silas, the Airbnb guy, also mentioned something about a hidden trail behind the
Old Mill* - something about a “forgotten spring.” I’m not sure I’m brave enough to go looking for it. But hey, that’s Bend, right? A little bit weird, a little bit wonderful, and a whole lot of rain. I’m gonna go find a record store and listen to some blues. Maybe that’ll chase away the shadows.

Seriously, check out TripAdvisor for more info: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g33236-Bend_Oregon-Vacations.html
