Prague’s a Blur: Lost in the Slate and Steam

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 667873… 1642046798. doesn’t even begin to cover it. i landed in prague like a dropped cymbal - loud, a little chaotic, and definitely out of tune. the air smells like chimney smoke and something vaguely sweet, like old pastries. it’s… intense.

seriously, the weather is… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like a perpetually damp grey hug. 7.76 feels like 7.76, temp min 7.76, temp max 7.97, pressure 1028, humidity 43, sea level 1028, grnd level 1013. it’s the kind of weather that makes you want to curl up with a book and a shot of something strong. which, let’s be honest, is pretty much my default setting anyway.

i spent the first few hours just wandering, mostly because i had no clue where i was going. the streets are all these ridiculously narrow alleys, and the buildings are just… slate. everywhere. it’s beautiful, in a crumbling, slightly depressing way. i stumbled across this tiny little courtyard with a fountain and a bunch of pigeons arguing over breadcrumbs. it was perfect.

found a place for lunch - a smoky, bustling joint called ‘U Medvidku’. someone told me that their goulash is legendary, and honestly, it was. thick, meaty, and served with bread so dense you could build a small house with it. i’m pretty sure i gained five pounds just from that meal. check out their menu here: https://www.umedvidku.cz/en/

met some locals - or at least, people who claimed to be locals. a guy named jan offered me a shot of something that tasted suspiciously like turpentine and told me to ‘just embrace the chaos.’ i took it. it was… an experience. i heard that the best beer is found in the smaller pubs, not the tourist traps. i’m trying to find one.

spent the afternoon getting hopelessly lost in the old town square. it’s insane. like, seriously packed with people, street performers, and vendors selling everything from puppets to handmade jewelry. i almost got run over by a horse-drawn carriage. it was exhilarating. i checked out TripAdvisor for recommendations on where to avoid the crowds: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g291516-Activities-Prague_Bohemia-Attractions.html

if you get bored, brno is just a short drive away. it’s… well, it’s something. i’m not entirely sure what it is, but it’s there. i’m thinking of checking out the Moravian Gallery.

seriously, the cobblestones are a nightmare for my boots. i’m pretty sure i’ve developed a permanent limp. and my feet are killing me. but it’s worth it. prague is just… a lot. a beautiful, confusing, slightly overwhelming lot. i’m going to find a dark alley and try to sleep. maybe i’ll dream of slate and steam.

*pro-tip: wear comfortable shoes. seriously. don’t try to navigate with a map. just wander. grab a trdelník (it’s a pastry thing, you’ll understand). listen to the street musicians. avoid the tourist traps. tip generously. bring a portable charger. don’t forget your ibuprofen.

overheard gossip:* “i heard that the astronomical clock only works properly on leap years.” “someone told me that the best view of prague castle is from the petřín hill.”
