Paris, Darling, and a Whole Lotta Damp: My Unexpected Week

okay, so paris. everyone raves, right? like, the obvious things. the eiffel tower, the louvre, the pastries that could make a grown man weep. and yeah, those are all…fine. but i’m here to tell you about the stuff you don’t see in the postcards. the damp chill that seeps into your bones, the pigeons that are basically tiny, feathered mafiosos, and the sheer, overwhelming noise.

I’m a touring session drummer, which means my life is a constant blur of airports, dodgy hotel rooms, and trying to remember which city I’m actually in. This gig was supposed to be a quick one - a week backing up some French pop star who, honestly, I can’t even pronounce. But it ended up being… something else entirely.

I just checked and it's drizzling steadily, a sort of persistent, grey sadness. The temperature’s hovering around ten point eight, feels like nine point three. Not exactly beach weather, you know? I’m used to the heat of LA, so this was a bit of a shock to the system.

I ended up staying in this tiny apartment in the Marais. It was… charming, in a “needs a serious dehumidifier” kind of way. The building itself was gorgeous, all wrought iron and peeling paint, but the walls were paper-thin. I could hear my neighbor practicing the accordion. Every. Single. Night. It was… an experience. If you get bored, Lille and Reims are just a short train ride away - maybe escape the accordion player there?

Speaking of neighbors, I overheard some serious gossip at a little cafe near my place. Apparently, there’s a cat that rules the entire neighborhood. Like, rules. People leave out food, build little shrines… it’s wild. Someone told me that the cat’s name is Monsieur Fluffernutter, and he’s got a whole social media following. I’m not kidding.

I spent a lot of time wandering around, trying to soak up the atmosphere. I stumbled upon this amazing little vintage shop - Le Chat Qui Rit - seriously, check it out if you’re into that kind of thing. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187149-d12345678-Reviews-Le_Chat_Qui_Rit-Paris_Ile_de_France.html - I picked up a killer leather jacket for like, twenty euros. Score! I also found this fantastic little bistro, Chez Gladines, https://www.yelp.com/biz/chez-gladines-paris - the Basque food is insane. Seriously, go hungry.

But here’s the thing: Paris isn’t always romantic. It’s crowded, it’s expensive, and sometimes it just feels… overwhelming. I heard that the locals are getting tired of the tourists, and honestly, I can kind of see their point. There were moments when I just wanted to escape, to find a quiet corner where I could just breathe.

*Pro-Tips for Surviving Paris (as a slightly sleep-deprived drummer):

*Earplugs: Seriously. The accordion. The sirens. The pigeons. You’ll thank me later.
*Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
*Learn a Few Basic French Phrases: Even just “bonjour” and “merci” go a long way.
*Don’t Be Afraid to Get Lost: Some of the best discoveries happen when you’re wandering aimlessly.
*Embrace the Damp:* It’s just part of the Parisian experience.

I’m already missing the chaos, though. And maybe even the accordion. A little. Check out some other travel blogs for more inspiration: https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/paris/

Pressure is at 1022, humidity is 55%. It's a weird combo, honestly. I'm heading back to LA now, ready for sunshine and silence. Or at least, less accordion.
