Memphis Mud & Misunderstood Melodies
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 4251841 and 1840007424… honestly, those numbers just kinda swam into my brain while i was staring at a rain-slicked street. it’s like a weird, insistent hum. i landed in Memphis yesterday, and it’s… intense. like, a really loud, soulful intense. the air smells like barbecue and something vaguely floral, which is a confusing combo, but i’m here for it.
The weather is… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 63% humidity, feels like 7.79 - basically, a sauna with a slight breeze. i checked the forecast, and it’s predicting more of the same for the next 48 hours. perfect. i’m already sweating through my vintage denim jacket. i’m trying to capture the sound here, you know? the blues, the soul, the grit. it’s not just music; it’s a feeling. i spent the afternoon wandering around Overton Park, dodging squirrels and trying to find some decent street art. it’s a weird mix of beautiful and… decaying. Like, really beautiful, but with a definite layer of ‘seen better days.’
I stumbled across this little record store called "Vinyl Vortex" - seriously, the name is ridiculous, but the selection is insane. I picked up a Muddy Waters album for a steal. Someone told me that the owner, Silas, used to play drums in a blues band back in the 70s. I heard that he’s a bit of a recluse, but he knows his stuff. I also checked out Yelp for some food recommendations - apparently, Rendezvous is a must-try for pulled pork. I’m gonna hit that tomorrow.
Speaking of food, I’m craving something greasy. Like, really greasy. I’m thinking ribs, fries, maybe a milkshake. Don’t judge. I’m a touring session drummer, my body runs on carbs and regret. I’m also trying to find a decent coffee shop. The only one I’ve found so far is “Brew & Blues,” which is… fitting. The coffee is okay, but the vibe is strong. It’s full of musicians and people who look like they’ve seen things.
I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb in Soulsville - it’s basically a closet with a bed. My neighbors are a retired accountant and a competitive pigeon racer. Seriously. The accountant, Mr. Henderson, keeps leaving notes on my door about the pigeons. It’s… charming, in a deeply unsettling way. If you get bored, Nashville is just a short drive away. I’m also planning a day trip to Graceland, obviously. It’s a tourist trap, but it’s a tourist trap I need to experience. I’m trying to find some authentic Beale Street blues clubs, too. I heard that B.B. King’s Blues Club is a good bet, but it’s always packed.
“Don’t trust anyone who says Memphis is ‘just’ a music city. It’s a feeling. A weight. A heartbeat.” - overheard from a guy nursing a whiskey at a dive bar.
I’m trying to document everything - the sounds, the smells, the faces. I’m taking a ton of photos, but honestly, I don’t even know if they’re good. I’m just trying to capture the essence of this place. It’s overwhelming, chaotic, and utterly captivating. I’m going to keep exploring, keep listening, and keep trying to make sense of it all. I’m also going to need more coffee. Seriously, a lot more coffee. Check out TripAdvisor for more local tips: TripAdvisor Memphis. And for some killer BBQ, head over to Yelp: Yelp Memphis.
“The humidity here is a weapon. It’ll steal your breath and your sanity. But the music… the music is worth it.” - a drunk bartender offering unsolicited advice.
I’m thinking of trying to find some street art to photograph tomorrow. Maybe I’ll even try to sketch something. I’m not sure. I’m just… feeling it all, you know? It’s a weird, messy, beautiful thing. I’m going to go find a place to sleep now. Hopefully, Mr. Henderson won’t send me another pigeon note.
“Seriously, the blues here are like a physical thing. You can feel them in the pavement.” - a local musician, completely serious.
I’m also adding a link to a local music board: Memphis Music Scene. It’s a good place to find out about live shows. And, you know, maybe find some more coffee. Seriously. More coffee.
