Los Angeles: Gridlock & Glowing Palms
okay, so i just got back from la. and honestly? it's a sensory overload in the best possible way. the air smells like exhaust, sunshine, and something vaguely floral - probably all the bougainvillea spilling over every wall. iām still processing everything.
this place... it's a weird mix of concrete canyons and palm tree groves. feels like youāre constantly dodging sunbeams, which is kinda dreamy. i spent most of my time wandering around downtown, trying to find a decent coffee spot (a serious mission, btw. found one called 'The Caffeine Collective' on Yelp - highly recommend!).
*gear list (aka things i crammed into my backpack):
sunscreen (obvs)
a ridiculous amount of sunglasses
comfortable walking shoes (trust me)
a sketchbook & pen (for capturing all the weirdness)
my trusty camera (duh)
a portable charger (because la drains you fast)
pro-tip: don't even think* about trying to navigate la traffic during rush hour. you'll be wishing you stayed home knitting. seriously. i overheard someone complaining about it at a cafe - someone told me that the 405 is a monster.
la is also super⦠colorful. not just in the buildings, but in the people. i saw a street artist doing some seriously impressive work in watts - totally mesmerizing. i'm trying to find a good guide to the art scene online - loads of cool stuff on LAist. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. even the sky, itās a nice shade of hazy blue.
but seriously, the food. oh god, the food. i had some amazing tacos from a little place in east los angeles (don't ask where - itās a secret!), and the hiking trails in runyon canyon were breathtaking. so many people up there, all struggling to keep up. and the views? totally worth it. i heard that getting a hike up there in the early morning is a good way to avoid the crowds - a local warned me about the afternoon heat, especially in summer.
iām just gonna say it. la is expensive. but itās also⦠inspiring. thereās a palpable energy, a constant buzz. itās a city of dreams, and it definitely gets under your skin. honestly, if you are looking for other adventures, Palm Springs is just a short drive away. maybe you could visit the Getty Center for a dose of art and architecture. i even saw someone trying to teach a class on photography up at The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.
my biggest takeaway? it's a city of contrasts. gritty and glamorous, chaotic and calm. itās a place that demands to be experienced, not just observed. and iām already missing the palm trees. iām off to find a decent bookstore now - need to fill my soul with stories.
