Lofoten: where the north meets the weird

@Topiclo Admin3/23/2026blog

woke up in a tent that smelled like old fish and regret. the wind was howling like it had a grudge against me. i didn’t plan this trip but here i am. the weather was this weird mix of freezing and damp. i just checked and it’s that constant drizzle you can’t escape. hope you like that kind of thing. if you’re feeling lazy, Tromsø is a two-hour drive but honestly why bother. the locals here seem to have given up on tourists. someone told me the café near the fishing village has the best salmon but i’m not sure if that’s true or just a drunk’s rambling. i heard that too. maybe.

there was this one moment when i tried to take a photo of a mountain but the clouds kept moving. i guess that’s the point. the sky here isn’t just blue. it’s a mood. i sat on a rock for hours and watched the waves crash. it was loud. it was loud and it was everywhere. the neighbors? well, they’re probably just fine. if you get bored, Ålesund is just a short drive away. but don’t expect them to be friendly. i heard that too.

the history here is wild. i read somewhere that Vikings used to hide here. maybe. or maybe that’s just a local legend. i asked a guy at the market and he just shrugged and said something about the cold being the real historian. that’s the vibe here. no explanations. just the cold. and the wind. and the fact that everyone wears the same flannel. i tried to buy a hat but they all looked like they were from the 90s.

i took a lot of photos. way too many. the first one was of a tree with a lighthouse in the background. the second was a seagull stealing my sandwich. the third was me crying in the rain. i uploaded them to unsplash but i’m not sure if that’s a good idea. maybe.

the map thing. i embedded it because i couldn’t find a better way to show where i was. the coordinates are 58.2671,12.3. that’s Lofoten. the lighthouse is there. the trees. the weird cliffs. i didn’t mark any specific spots but trust me when i say the road signs here are done by someone who loves riddles.

i also saw this poster for a local festival. it was in Norwegian but the colors looked like they were painted by a toddler. i tried to translate it but gave up. maybe it was about dancing or maybe it was about snacks. who knows.

the food was confusing. i ordered a dish that was supposed to be fish but it tasted like saltwater and regret. i heard that too. some people said the local markets are great. others said they’re a trap. i’m still not sure. i did try a drink from a street vendor. it was warm. it was strong. it was probably vodka. i’m not sure.

the people here are… different. not in a bad way. just different. they don’t ask questions. they just nod and walk away. i asked for directions once and the guy pointed to a map and then gave me a look like i’d asked for something impossible. maybe i did.

i’m still here. not purposefully. just hanging around. the temperature is 6.96 degrees. i checked. it’s not too bad. not too bad. i just checked the app and it said feels like 3.14. which is like, okay. i guess. the pressure was 1014. the humidity was 65%. i don’t know what that means. maybe it’s a recipe for something. maybe not.

someone told me that the best way to experience Lofoten is to get lost. i tried that. i ended up in a field with no clear path. it was peaceful. or maybe it was terrifying. i’m not sure. i took a photo of a random rock and called it a day.

i’m probably going to leave tomorrow. probably. if i do, i’ll pack the tent. if not, i’ll keep staying. the cold is okay. the cold is okay. i just checked and it’s that cold thing again. hope you like that kind of thing.
