Lisbon’s a Blur: Rain, Pastel Buildings, and a Whole Lotta Lost Socks
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso. 2561978… that’s the timestamp on my phone, which is currently displaying a picture of a very confused pigeon. 1504929490 - that’s the number of times i’ve checked the weather. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like a permanent, slightly damp grey. the air pressure is holding steady at 1012, humidity’s hovering around 56%, and the ground level is a surprisingly low 854 - which, honestly, feels a bit depressing. i’m not gonna lie, i’m starting to think this whole ‘digital nomad’ thing is just a fancy way of saying ‘permanently exhausted.’
Lisbon, though? it’s… intense. like, a beautiful, chaotic, slightly sticky intense. i landed yesterday and immediately got lost trying to find my Airbnb. it was tucked away down a ridiculously narrow alleyway, overflowing with potted plants and the faint scent of something vaguely floral and definitely old. the whole place felt like a movie set for a Wes Anderson film, but with more stray cats. i swear, there were at least five.
I spent the afternoon wandering around Alfama, which is basically a giant, crumbling labyrinth of cobblestone streets. it’s gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but also terrifying. i nearly tripped over a stack of laundry three times. someone told me that the best pastel de nata are at Pastéis de Belém - seriously, don’t miss those. i heard that they’ve been making them the same way since 1837, which is either a miracle or a really, really long-running scam. i’m leaning towards the scam.
I stumbled upon this tiny little bar called ‘O Barcão’ - it was packed with locals, all shouting and laughing and drinking ridiculously strong ginjinha. it was… a vibe. a loud, boisterous, slightly intimidating vibe. i ordered a ginjinha (cherry liqueur - surprisingly good) and just soaked it all in.
Someone overheard me complaining about the rain and said, "Lisbon doesn’t have rain, it weeps." I’m not sure if that’s true, but it’s a pretty good description.
I’ve been trying to capture the city with my camera, but honestly, it’s proving difficult. everything is so saturated with color - the yellows, the pinks, the blues - it’s almost overwhelming. i’m aiming for a gritty, authentic feel, but i think i’m mostly just getting blurry shots of pigeons and crumbling walls. i’m seriously considering investing in a good lens. or maybe just a really, really strong coffee.
Speaking of coffee, i found this place called ‘The Bean’ - it’s run by a guy named Ricardo who takes his coffee very seriously. he grinds the beans by hand, froths the milk with a tiny little whisk, and generally treats coffee like it’s the most important thing in the world. which, let’s be honest, it probably is. check it out: https://www.thebeanlisbon.com/.
I’m also trying to explore beyond the tourist hotspots. i spent a few hours yesterday wandering through the LX Factory, which is a converted industrial complex filled with quirky shops, restaurants, and art studios. it’s a bit hipster, but in a cool, non-pretentious way. i found a vintage shop there that was absolutely overflowing with amazing clothes - i scored a seriously rad 70s denim jacket.
If you get bored, Porto is just a short drive away. Seriously, it’s like, an hour and a half on the train.
I’m currently sitting in a cafe, nursing a coffee and trying to figure out my next move. i’m thinking of checking out the Jerónimos Monastery tomorrow - it’s supposed to be incredible. but first, i need to find a laundromat. my socks are starting to revolt.
Oh, and one last thing: don’t trust the advice of anyone who says Lisbon is ‘easy.’ it’s not. it’s challenging, it’s confusing, and it’s utterly captivating.
