Kolkata Chaos

okay, so kolkata. where do i even start? i landed last night and it felt like being thrown into a washing machine set to 'high.' the air… it’s thick. honestly, i just checked and it's… humid, there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

this trip was supposed to be about finding myself, you know? the whole 'digital nomad' thing. but right now, i mainly feel like i’m trying not to get run over by a scooter. the numbers i have scribbled down (655194 and 1246938345 - no clue what they mean, just felt… significant) keep popping into my head. maybe they're some ancient code? or just random digits conjured by pre-flight anxiety.

my room at the The Oberoi Grand Kolkata is… swanky. bordering on aggressively opulent. i’m definitely feeling the contrast between this and the streets outside. i’m staying here for a few nights then might try to find something a little more…local. something with less marble and more character.

The neighbors here are a mix of tourists who look perpetually bewildered and locals who seem to navigate the chaos with an unnerving calm. if you get bored, Darjeeling is just a short drive away. i'm thinking of making that trip. i heard that the food stalls around Park Street are amazing, but *beware of the street food vendors who try to upsell you on extra chili powder - someone told me that it's a test of courage, and i’m decidedly not courageous when it comes to spice levels.

i’ve been trying (and mostly failing) to document everything with my chunky old camera. it’s a vintage Pentax K1000 - loves it, but it’s not exactly fast. it's the kind of camera that forces you to actually
look at the scene, which is probably a good thing in a city as visually overwhelming as this one. i'm trying to capture the small moments: the way the sunlight hits the buildings, the expressions on people's faces, the sheer density of life. Chintabalan is apparently a great place for a traditional Bengali meal. i'm definitely checking that out!

Lonely Planet says Kolkata is a sensory overload, and they’re not kidding. the smells - incense, spices, something vaguely floral mixed with exhaust fumes - are constant. the sounds - car horns, street vendors shouting, music spilling out from doorways - never stop. it’s intense.

Someone told me that you absolutely
have* to take a boat trip down the Hooghly River. Apparently, it's the best way to see the city unfold.

my vibe here is…exhausted but strangely energized. it's a lot to take in, a lot to process. i'm definitely going to need a lot of chai. i think the city breathes differently than anywhere else i've been. maybe the numbers, 655194 & 1246938345, aren't just random- maybe they're frequency of the city itself, a pulse you can feel in your bones. or maybe i’m just delirious from the heat.

right now, i'm heading to a local market nearby. will report back, assuming i survive. wish me luck. and maybe send some earplugs.
