Huron Shores: Frozen Frames and Fleaky Ghost Lights

okay, so i’ve been freezing my fingers off in huron shores for the past week. the lighthouse here is a dream, but man, it’s cold. i just looked out the window and it's...that kind of icy sting where your teeth ache, hope you’ve got thermal socks. if you need a break from all this white, detroit’s just a quick zigzag through the woods away. totally worth it for the city lights though.

this town’s a photographer’s nightmare and dream - nightmare because of the *battery drain in the cold, dream because the light on the frozen lake is like liquid silver. i’m crashing at this motel that smells like old fries, but the owner lets me hijack their outlets to charge my gear. there’s this spot the locals call ‘6107761’ - a frozen pier that’s perfect for long exposures, but only if you know the secret handshake. my camera tags it as 1124509835. don’t ask, it’s just how my rolls go.

“heard from the local bartender that the lighthouse is haunted, especially when the ice cracks. he said to bring extra batteries if you go at night - the cold eats ’em alive.”

i’ve been playing with
long shutter speeds to capture the ice patterns. sometimes it works, sometimes i get a blurry mess. yesterday i tried dawn shots and ended up with frostbite on my thumb. totally worth it though. you can grab a decent coffee at the downtown cafe - they’ve got a fireplace and free wifi. check it out if you’re passing through.

“some guy at the diner said the best photo op is at dawn, but only if you don’t mind the frostbite. he also mentioned that the eagles come around then - big ones that look like flying bricks.”

i’ve got a
hand warmer stuffed in my camera bag. it’s saved my lens a couple times. the pressure’s been screwy - makes the sky look all moody. yesterday it dropped to 988 and the sky just...opened up. it was like the whole lake was holding its breath. tried to capture that feeling, but photos never do it justice. if you’re into abandoned buildings*, there’s an old factory near the docks that’s pretty creepy. a local warned me that it’s structurally unsound, so watch your step. oh, and there’s a photography group that meets at the library every tuesday. they’re friendly and know all the secret spots.

tonight i’m heading out to the lighthouse again. the humidity’s 80% so it’s gonna be foggy. i’ve heard fog makes the light look extra spooky. someone told me the previous keeper still walks the grounds. haven’t seen him, but i’ll keep my eyes open. maybe i’ll get a shot of a ghost? or maybe i’ll just get pneumonia. only time will tell.

so yeah, that’s the scoop on huron shores. it’s cold, it’s weird, and it’s full of photo ops if you’re brave enough. i’m heading out now - my fingers are already going numb. peace out.
