Guadalajara Shopping Spree: Markets, Malls, and My Broken Lens
so here i am in guadalajara, camera around my neck, trying to capture the chaos of shopping but first i gotta find a new lens because mine decided to take a vacation mid-market. this cityâs a photographerâs dream and walletâs nightmare-rentâs around $500 for a decent 1-bedroom if you dodge the tourist traps, but safety-wise? stick to centro and zapopan after dark unless you fancy explaining to your insurance why your gear got âlostâ in juĂĄrez. job marketâs brutal unless youâre into tequila or tech, but hey, the agave fields look epic through a telephoto lens.
the sunâs playing hide-and-seek with the clouds today-perfect for shooting outdoor markets but brutal when youâre lugging camera gear. puerto vallartaâs just a short flight away if you need a beach break, or tequila for that matter. speaking of which, the mercado san juan de dios is a madhouse of color and noise, but that local vendor warned me, âwatch your pockets, gringo. theyâre slick here, not like the pickpockets back in brooklyn-these guys are artists.â
spent half my budget at mercado libertad on talavera pottery and some weirdly shaped cacti-turns out you canât ship those back to nyc without a permit. drunk advice from a guy named carlos at antonioâs bar: âskip the mall, hit the tianguis on sundays. real mexican hustle, no fake smiles.â overheard a tourist arguing over prices at plaza del sol, âtheyâre supposed to be cheaper here!â lady, youâre in a mall, not a flea market.
*chiles de ĂĄrbol are everywhere-smoked, dried, powdered. bought a bag thinking itâd be mild. spoiler: it wasnât. tequila tasting rooms in la mina are legit, but skip the âpremiumâ shots if you wanna remember the night. cobblestone streets in tlaquepaque will murder your ankles but your instagram will thank you.
> âdude, that âhandmadeâ sombrero? mass-produced from china. real ones cost a kidney.â -overheard at mercado san agustĂn
> âthe centro histĂłrico markets close at 6pm. be there by 4 or eat dust and frustration.â -something a local yelled from her taco stand
found my replacement lens at sur plaza mall, but the markup made me wanna cry. tip? hit guadalajara flea market on saturdays. real deals, no corporate bs. and for godâs sake, avoid plaza galerĂa* unless you wanna pay $15 for a coffee.
