Greyhaven: Damp Soil, Drier Wit
okay, so i'm in greyhaven and it's wet, like properly british wet. the weather app says 6.6°c but feels like 1.95°c - what even is that? feels like my bones are marinating in cold tea. humidity's at 78%, so everything's damp, even my notebook pages are sighing. my gps spat out 2652974 and 1826044595 for this marsh area, but i think it's just glitching; still, site 2652974 is where the magic happens.
i came here for site 2652974, the salt marshes. the greyhaven tidal flora is something else - see that image? that's the common saltmarsh grass, but it's got this purpley tinge this time of year.
someone told me that the local council wants to drain part of it for a golf course. can you believe it? i heard that from a guy at the seaweed cafe, who also swore by their kelp sandwiches - try it, it's not as bad as it sounds. for more on the campaign, check out the greyhaven conservation trust website.
the botanic gardens are tiny but packed with survivors. like this south african protea holding its own in a greenhouse that leaks when it rains. which is always.
if you get restless, the city of newhaven is a ferry ride across the bay. check the ferry times here to plan your trip. they have a proper market, not this tourist trap. but beware, i heard the buskers there are ruthless - one told me to get lost when i didn't tip enough. anyway, for ferry schedules, see the local transport board.
i've been hanging at the old pier, where the gulls argue over fish scraps. the light here is diffuse, perfect for photographing lichen on the railings. i met a photographer who said the best shots are at dawn, but i'm not a morning person, so i'll take what i get. if you need camera gear, there's a shop on marine road - check their yelp for reviews, but take them with a grain of salt.
for eats, skip the seafront chippies - someone warned me that the 'traditional' cod is often frozen. instead, hit up the backstreet deli that sources from local organic farms. they have a killer beetroot sandwich. the tripadvisor page for 'the green basket' is mostly positive, but i think the sandwiches speak for themselves.
pressure's sitting at 1020 hpa, which means stable weather, but with this humidity, it feels heavier than my pack after a day of collecting samples. the sky's been weeping all day, hope you're into that whole 'atmospheric' thing.
i've got to say, the neighbors here are the tide and the wind. and the occasional dog walker who thinks my plant press is a weird handbag. if you hike the coastal path, you'll see the old radar station - coordinates nearby 1826044595, i think - someone mentioned it's haunted, but i think that's just the fog playing tricks.
anyway, i'm off to find some sea lavender before the rain sets in. catch you later.
