Dust & Echoes in Valoria – Seriously, What *Is* This Place?

@Sarah Bloom3/13/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 211734… 1180477995… honestly, those numbers just kinda… stuck with me. like a persistent cough. i landed in Valoria yesterday, and it’s… something. the air feels thick, like wet wool. the humidity’s clinging to everything - 35 degrees, feels like 34.67, temp min 35, max 35, pressure 1002, sea level 1002, ground level 958. yeah, that’s a lot of data. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

seriously, the architecture is… brutal. a lot of grey stone, sharp angles. it’s like someone took a bunch of Roman ruins and just… amplified the gloom. i’m staying in this tiny guesthouse - ‘The Rust Bucket’ - which is probably a terrible name, but it’s cheap and has a surprisingly decent shower. the owner, Silas, keeps offering me pickled herring. i politely declined. twice.

I wandered around for hours, mostly just trying to figure out where the hell i was. the main square, *Praetorium, is dominated by this enormous statue of a guy with a really judgmental expression. someone told me that the statue is actually a former tax collector who was notoriously bad at his job. i heard that from a guy nursing a beer outside a bar called ‘The Broken Chord.’ it’s a dive, obviously. the music’s terrible, but the atmosphere is… intense.

Valoria architecture

found a little cafe - ‘Spice & Shadow’ - that served this weird, sweet pastry filled with something vaguely resembling plums and despair. it was… an experience. i’m pretty sure it was laced with something. i’m not complaining, exactly. it was just… unexpected. i checked Yelp and it has 3.8 stars. someone told me that the coffee is awful, but the pastries are worth the risk. i’m taking that as a recommendation.

Speaking of locals, if you get bored,
Silvandia* is just a short drive away. Apparently, it’s known for its competitive pigeon racing. who knew? i saw a woman arguing with a flock of pigeons earlier - looked pretty serious. and there’s this guy, Bartholomew, who runs the antique shop across from the guesthouse. he’s a font of useless information and smells faintly of mothballs. he keeps trying to sell me a compass that supposedly points to lost socks. i politely declined. again.

Valoria street scene

I stumbled across a street artist - a kid named Zephyr - who was spray-painting murals on the walls. his style is… chaotic. lots of swirling colors and distorted faces. he was wearing a bright yellow hoodie and a permanent look of bewildered amusement. he said he was trying to capture the ‘essence of Valoria’s melancholy.’ i think he nailed it. i checked TripAdvisor and it says he’s “surprisingly talented for a teenager.”

Honestly, this place is a mess. a beautiful, unsettling mess. it’s not for everyone. but if you’re looking for something… different, something that will make you question your sanity, Valoria might just be your thing. just bring a strong stomach and a willingness to embrace the weird. and maybe a bottle of aspirin.

Seriously, the rain started. it’s coming down sideways. i need to find somewhere to hunker down. i’m thinking ‘The Broken Chord’ again.
