Dust & Echoes in Valletta
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso. i landed in valletta yesterday, and honestly, it’s… intense. like, a really beautiful, crumbling, sun-baked intense. the air’s thick with something - salt, maybe, or just the weight of centuries. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity’s clinging to everything, 18% according to my phone, which is probably lying. the pressure’s 1011, which feels…stable. not great, but stable.
seriously, the architecture is insane. like, layers upon layers of honey-colored stone, all leaning into each other like they’re trying to remember where they’re going. i spent a good three hours just wandering the streets, getting hopelessly lost and then finding a tiny cafe with the best pastizzi i’ve ever tasted. it’s a chaotic mess, but a beautiful one. i’m trying to capture it all with my camera, but it feels… inadequate. it’s like trying to bottle the sound of the sea.
my gear list is a disaster, obviously. i’ve got my battered Leica, a half-empty roll of film, and a notebook full of scribbled nonsense. i also have a crippling addiction to dark chocolate and a vague sense of impending doom.
essentials: camera, film, notebook, chocolate, ibuprofen, a ridiculously oversized hat.
someone told me that the Upper Barrakka Gardens offer the best views of the harbor, but i heard that from a guy who was three sheets to the wind and wearing a pirate hat. i’m taking it with a grain of salt (literally, there’s salt everywhere). i’m checking out TripAdvisor for some alternative viewpoints - maybe something a little less…pirate-y.
i stumbled across a little shop selling vintage maps - seriously cool stuff. the owner, a grumpy old guy named joseph, kept muttering about the “good old days” and the decline of proper cartography. he gave me a discount because i complimented his collection of antique compasses.
if you get bored, slovenia is just a short drive away. i’m thinking about heading there next, but first, i need to find a decent espresso. i’m seriously craving something with a bit more kick.
Someone overheard me complaining about the heat and said, “Valletta’s got a soul, kid. You just gotta let it soak in.” I think they were right. It’s…sticky.
i’m trying to find a decent place for dinner. Yelp is my friend, but honestly, most of the reviews are just people raving about the seafood. i’m not a huge seafood fan, so that’s not exactly helpful. i’m looking for something with a bit more…meat.
pro-tip: wear comfortable shoes. you’ll be doing a lot of walking. and bring sunscreen. seriously, the sun is brutal.
I heard that the Saluting Battery ceremony is a must-see, but it’s only on Sundays and Wednesdays. Also, don’t try to get too close - you’ll get yelled at. Apparently, the guards take their job very seriously.
i’m starting to feel like a ghost myself, wandering through these ancient streets. it’s a strange feeling, being surrounded by so much history, but also feeling so utterly insignificant. i’m trying to document it all, but it’s hard to capture the essence of a place like this. it’s more about the feeling, you know? the dust, the echoes, the heat.
My friend, a disillusioned consultant, swore Valletta was a “tactical nightmare” for navigation. He said the narrow streets were designed to confuse invaders. I think he just hated walking.
i’m heading to the Lascaris War Rooms next. apparently, they’re full of fascinating (and slightly depressing) stories about the Maltese campaign during World War II. i’m hoping to find some inspiration for my next blog post. maybe i’ll write about the futility of war, or the enduring power of the human spirit. or maybe i’ll just rant about the lack of decent coffee.
i’m going to try and find a rooftop bar for a drink. the view is supposed to be incredible. i’m hoping to catch the sunset.
i’m exhausted. really, really exhausted. but i’m also strangely exhilarated. valletta is a mess, a beautiful, chaotic mess, and i wouldn’t have it any other way.
