Dust & Drum Beats: Lost in Lisbon’s Grey
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso. i landed in lisbon yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a lot. like, a beautiful, crumbling, slightly damp lot. the humidity is clinging to everything - it’s like a persistent, apologetic hug. 19.08 feels like 17.93, and the pressure’s sitting at 1014. it’s…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i just checked and it’s drizzling, but not aggressively. more like a thoughtful, melancholic mist.
my mission? find some rhythm. i’m a touring session drummer, you know? always chasing the next beat, the next space to make some noise. and lisbon, man, it’s got a pulse. a slow, heavy, soulful pulse. i’m staying in Alfama, which is basically a giant, winding labyrinth of cobblestones and tiny, overflowing shops. it’s chaotic, but in a good way. like a really intense, slightly alarming game of musical chairs.
i stumbled across this little tasca - ‘O Velho Eurico’ - completely by accident. someone told me that the bacalhau is legendary, and they weren’t kidding. it was salty, rich, and tasted like a thousand stories. i overheard a group of older men arguing passionately about fado music - something a local warned me about, apparently it’s a serious business. they were gesturing wildly, slamming their hands on the table, and generally making a scene. it was glorious.
gear list, because i’m a sucker for a good list:
my kit (obviously) - a battered but beloved Gretsch Catalina Club kit. it’s seen some things.
noise-canceling headphones (essential for escaping the tourist hordes)
a ridiculously oversized backpack (i overpack, always)
a portable recorder (for capturing those fleeting moments of inspiration)
a notebook and a pen (because ideas hit you at the weirdest times)
a serious supply of ibuprofen (trust me on this one).
i spent the afternoon wandering through the LX Factory, a converted industrial complex filled with quirky shops, restaurants, and street art. it’s a total hipster haven, but in the best possible way. i found this amazing vintage clothing store - ‘Lost & Found’ - and scored a killer 70s denim jacket. it’s screaming ‘lisbon’ right now. i’m thinking of incorporating it into my stage outfits.
i’m trying to find a good place to jam. i heard that the ‘A Baião’ club in Bairro Alto has some incredible live music - particularly traditional Portuguese sounds. i’m hoping to catch a session there tonight. if you get bored, Porto is just a short drive away. it’s a bit of a trek, but worth it if you’re into port wine and dramatic coastlines.
the air smells like salt, coffee, and something vaguely floral. it’s a strange, intoxicating combination. i’m starting to feel a rhythm, a connection to this place. it’s not perfect, it’s messy, it’s a little bit broken, but it’s real. and that’s what i’m after. i’m heading to check out the Time Out Market Lisboa next - apparently, it’s a foodie paradise. i’m starving.
