Dhār Diaries: Heat, History, and Hustle

dhār isn’t exactly on the typical tourist radar, but that’s exactly why it’s worth the detour. this ancient town in madhya pradesh feels like a place where time folds in on itself-ruins from the malwa sultanate sit next to bustling markets, and the air smells like a mix of history and frying samosas.

i just checked and it’s 37.65°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is a measly 12%, so at least you won’t feel like you’re swimming through the air-just baking slowly.

walking through the bhojshala campus, i overheard a group of students debating whether the 11th-century poet bhoja actually wrote all those treatises himself or if he just had really good ghostwriters. classic academic gossip. someone else told me the dhār fort has the best sunset views, but also that the guard might ask you for “chai money” if you linger too long. take that as you will.

if you get bored, indore and ujjain are just a short drive away. indore for the street food (poha-jalebi, anyone?), ujjain for the riverside ghats and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a slower, more spiritual rhythm.

food-wise, i kept hearing about sharma’s sweets from every rickshaw driver. apparently their mawa jalebi is “life-changing” or at least “worth the calories.” i’m not one to argue with local consensus.

the bazaar near the jama masjid is a sensory overload in the best way-colorful fabrics, the clang of brass utensils, and the occasional cow deciding to nap in the middle of the road. if you’re into offbeat heritage, dhār delivers without the selfie-stick crowds.

for more offbeat travel inspo, check out tripadvisor’s madhya pradesh guide or yelp for indore eats. and if you’re planning to road-trip, maybe avoid the afternoon sun-unless you enjoy feeling like a human tandoor.

this isn’t a place that tries to impress you. it just is. and honestly, that’s kind of refreshing.
