Cologne Chronicles: Drum Beats, Beer Gardens & One Very Confused Tourist

okay, so here i am in cologne, germany, and let me tell you-it's colder than my ex's heart. just checked the weather and it's sitting at a balmy 0.69°c right now, with humidity so high it feels like i'm breathing through a wet sock. but hey, that's touring life for ya. you adapt or you freeze. literally.

i'm here as a touring session drummer, which basically means i'm the human metronome for whoever needs me. tonight's gig is at this dive bar called king george-yeah, the name sounds fancy but trust me, it's more "sticky floors" than "royal treatment." someone told me that the sound guy once mixed a whole set with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back. not sure if that's a flex or a warning.

walking around the city earlier, i stumbled into a beer garden that smelled like pretzels and regret. the locals here? they don't mess around with their lager. i tried to order a "light beer" and got laughed out of the place. lesson learned: in cologne, beer is a lifestyle, not a beverage.

"if you're not drinking kölsch, you're just holding a glass,"

a guy in a leather jacket muttered to his friend. i didn't get it at the time, but now i do. it's like trying to play jazz with a metronome-you're just doing it wrong.

if you get bored, düsseldorf and bonn are just a short train ride away. düsseldorf's got that artsy vibe if you're into galleries and people who wear sunglasses indoors. bonn? more like bonn-voyage if you're into history and pretending you understand classical music.

for food, i hit up papa joe's bierstube because a drunk local swore it was "the only place where the schnitzel sings." i'm still not sure if he meant that literally or if i should've stopped drinking hours ago. either way, the schnitzel was crispy, the beer was cold, and my stomach is now on speaking terms with me again.

random tip: if you're into street art, check out the ehrenstraße area. it's like someone let a graffiti artist loose in a candy store. just don't touch anything-cologne's street art scene is as protective as a drummer with his favorite snare.

and yeah, i know what you're thinking: "why is this post so messy?" well, that's the point. life on the road isn't a highlight reel. it's missed trains, weird hostel roommates, and accidentally ordering tripe because you thought it was a type of pasta. (spoiler: it's not.)

anyway, if you're ever in cologne and hear a drummer playing so fast it sounds like a hummingbird on meth, that's probably me. come say hi, but bring a jacket-it's colder than a drummer's dating life out here.
