Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2457163 and 1466571211 - don’t ask, it’s a thing. the air here is…thick. like, you can almost taste the damp concrete and something vaguely floral, maybe from those overgrown window boxes. the temp is hovering around 20, feels like 18, min 20, max 20, pressure’s a solid 1013, humidity’s clinging to everything at 18, and sea level’s a depressing 981. it’s…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
Bristol. it’s…a lot. i landed yesterday and immediately felt like i’d stumbled into a slightly off-kilter film set. the architecture is a chaotic mix of brutalist concrete and pastel-colored Victorian terraces. it’s beautiful in a way that makes you want to simultaneously hug it and run screaming. i’m staying in this tiny Airbnb near Stokes Croft - seriously, it’s smaller than my drum kit - and the walls are paper-thin. i’ve already had a lengthy conversation with the guy next door about his collection of vintage teapots. he’s a retired clockmaker, apparently. if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away.
I spent the morning wandering around the street art scene. Bristol’s a proper hub for it, you know? Banksy’s influence is everywhere, but there’s so much other stuff too - intricate murals, bold stencils, even some seriously weird 3D installations. i found this amazing little gallery tucked away down a side street - ‘Upfest’ - showcasing work from artists all over the world. it’s a total rabbit hole. check it out: https://upfest.uk/.
Then, i hit up the Harbourside. it’s…well, it’s a harbor. but it’s a cool harbor. there are these massive cranes looming over everything, and the boats are all painted in these crazy, vibrant colors. i grabbed a pint at a pub called ‘The Grainery’ - it’s got a massive fireplace and a surprisingly decent selection of craft beers. someone told me that the landlord, Barry, has a parrot named Reginald who only repeats the phrase ‘pass the salt.’ wild.
I overheard some locals talking about a hidden underground club called ‘The Cauldron’ - apparently, it’s only open on certain nights and you have to know someone to get in. i’m intrigued, but also slightly terrified. i also heard that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is haunted by the ghost of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who apparently hated pigeons. seriously. https://www.cliftonbridge.org.uk/.
Speaking of weird, i stumbled across this vintage clothing shop called ‘Threads of Time’ - it was crammed full of amazing pieces from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. i scored a killer denim jacket for £30. it’s slightly too big, but i’ll figure it out. i’m thinking of distressing it myself. i need to find a good tailor. https://www.threadsoftime.co.uk/.
I’m trying to capture the whole Bristol vibe for my Instagram - lots of moody shots, close-ups of street art, and blurry photos of me looking generally exhausted. it’s a challenge. i’m aiming for that ‘effortlessly cool’ aesthetic, but honestly, i just feel like a stressed-out mess.
Here’s my gear list for Bristol (because, you know, organization):
Camera (obviously)
Notebook & Pen (for capturing all the weirdness)
Portable Charger (essential)
Rain Jacket (it’s Bristol, duh)
Comfortable Shoes (i’ve been walking a lot)
Emergency Chocolate (for when the existential dread kicks in)
And a quick tip: don’t trust anything you hear from the guys at the bus station. they’re notorious for giving terrible directions and selling you fake souvenirs. i heard that they once tried to convince a tourist that a pigeon was a rare breed of exotic bird. https://www.bristolbus.co.uk/
Seriously, Bristol. it’s…something. i’m going to find a decent coffee shop and try to get some sleep. wish me luck.
