bogota on a shoestring: when your student loan meets the andes

just landed in bogotá with $7 in my pocket and a questionable hostel booking. turns out *la candelaria is the place to crash if you’re broke - dorm beds for like $8 a night, though someone warned me about the ‘mystery stains’ on the walls. pro tip: bring earplugs. the street noise starts at 4am and doesn’t quit.

i just checked the weather and it’s
clinging to 29°C with this sticky humidity that makes everything feel 36°C, so if you enjoy walking around in a lukewarm armpit, you’ll love it. the locals? man, they move like they’re caffeinated on pure oxygen even at 2pm.

food-wise, skip the tourist traps. found this
comida típica stand near la plaza de mercado where a plate costs $3 and includes this mystery meat that might be alpaca or maybe just really determined chicken. heard from a dude with dreadlocks down to his knees that the best empanadas are sold out of a blue cart by the jueves market, but only on thursdays. so obviously i showed up on a tuesday. brilliant.

if you get stir-crazy, zipaquirá’s salt cathedral is a $10 bus ride away and totally worth it. the locals say it’s ‘god’s disco ball’ but honestly the acoustics are terrible for singing hymns.

also, someone told me that the gold museum has free entry on sunday mornings, but only if you look ‘educationally confused’. i practiced my ‘i failed art history’ face for 20 minutes and it worked. mostly.

for real though,
transmilenio* buses are chaotic but cheaper than therapy. just watch your pockets - my friend got pickpocketed and the thief apparently used his credit card to buy empanadas. poetic justice? maybe. check out bogota’s transit tips if you’re not into street food theft. yelp lists some cheap eats too, though i swear most reviews are written by people who’ve never eaten ramen from a styrofoam cup before. and the local forum will tell you everything except how to actually enjoy this city on $5 a day.
