Bodhgaya: Where the Buddha Got His Groove Back

woke up this morning with a weird urge to go somewhere spiritual. like, not the usual tourist trap spiritual-the real deal. so here i am in bodhgaya, bihar, staring at the mahabodhi temple wondering if i should just sit down and try to achieve enlightenment before lunch.

i just checked and it's 20.26°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. perfect for wandering around in sandals and pretending you're deep in thought.

this place is crawling with monks in orange robes and tourists in yoga pants who probably think they're one meditation away from nirvana. i overheard a guy in a durag say the best chai in town is at this hole-in-the-wall called "the buddha's brew" so i went. it was legit.

if you get bored, varanasi and patna are just a short drive away. but honestly, why would you leave? bodhgaya's got everything: ancient vibes, cheap food, and enough incense to make you forget your ex.

i heard from a dreadlocked dude that the rooftop guesthouse near the temple has the best sunrise views. he also said something about a secret meditation spot behind the japanese temple but wouldn't give me directions. classic.

pro tip: bring a scarf. not for fashion-for the dust. and maybe some earplugs if you're staying near the temple. the prayer bells start at 4am and they don't mess around.

this isn't the kind of place where you check things off a list. it's the kind of place where you sit on a bench, eat a samosa, and realize you've been holding your breath for three days.

check out more about bodhgaya on tripadvisor or find a local guide on yelp. if you're into buddhist history, the mahabodhi society has some cool reads.
