Berlin Breakdown: Lost in Translation (and the Rain)

okay, so i landed in berlin. 2993002… seriously? what even is that? i’m not sure if it's a flight number, a postcode, or someone’s incredibly long grocery list. and then there’s 1250412579. feels like a code to unlock a secret… or maybe just a really complicated parking garage. the weather here? it’s… damp. there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air smells like wet concrete and something vaguely industrial - not in a bad way, just… present.

i’m staying in a little neighborhood near Prenzlauer Berg. the buildings are all these tall, blocky things, painted in faded pastel colors. the neighbors seem to mostly ignore each other, which is… something. if you get bored, Potsdam is just a short trip away. i saw a sign for a historical walking tour on TripAdvisor - maybe that’s my plan for tomorrow.

honestly, the first thing i did was wander. just got pleasantly lost in the maze of streets. stumbled upon this tiny little cafe with the most amazing smelling coffee. seriously, the barista looked like he’d personally roasted the beans himself. but it was pricey. like, ‘student budget’ pricey. i’m trying to embrace the chaos, you know? no rigid itineraries, just see where the wind (and the occasional tram) takes me.

my initial impression? it's got this weird energy. a mix of old and new, gritty and polished. i heard that the East Side Gallery is a must-see - a massive remaining section of the Berlin Wall turned into an open-air art gallery. someone told me that the Currywurst is a lifesaver after a long day of exploring. i’m definitely planning on trying that.

there’s a lot of history here, obviously. you can’t really escape it. i’m planning on checking out the Brandenburg Gate and maybe the Reichstag Building. i also saw a cool little vintage shop on Yelp that might be worth a visit. i’m always on the lookout for unique finds.

“Don't ask for directions, just embrace the wrong turns. You might find something amazing.” - overheard from a guy with a very impressive beard.

the humidity is clinging to everything. it’s the kind of humidity that makes your hair do things it shouldn’t. i’m pretty sure i saw a pigeon wearing a tiny hat earlier. probably not, but hey, berlin is full of surprises. i’m thinking of hitting up a street art tour - the city is covered in incredible murals, and it feels like a good way to get a sense of the local vibe.

the pressure is a steady 1010, the humidity's holding strong at 45%. feels a little close, tbh.

i keep seeing people cycling everywhere. it seems like the most efficient way to get around. and there are so many cool little shops and cafes tucked away on side streets. i just checked and it's… overcast, but not raining. hope you like that kind of thing. i'm trying to navigate using a combination of Google Maps (which is proving… optimistic) and pure gut feeling.

someone warned me about aggressive seagulls near the waterfront. apparently, they’re not afraid of humans. good to know.

i’m definitely feeling the inspiring energy of this city. it’s a little overwhelming, a little chaotic, but in a really good way. i’m gonna explore some more tomorrow. maybe find a hidden courtyard or a quirky little museum. who knows what i’ll discover?

i’m thinking of checking out a local board to see if there are any indie film screenings happening. i’m a sucker for a good independent flick. i’ll keep you posted on my adventures. and if you're ever in berlin, don't hesitate to reach out - i'm always up for a coffee (or a very strong beer).

i’m also interested in the city's history. maybe a visit to a museum focused on the Cold War? it seems like a crucial part of berlin’s identity.
