Berlin Bleeds: A Soundtrack of Rain and Regret
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. the time zone is a cruel joke, honestly. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 125188 and 1364057697 - those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like lost drum fills. it’s weird, right? like a glitch in the matrix of travel.
berlin. it’s… intense. not in a ‘pretty postcard’ kind of way. more like a ‘you’ve been warned’ kind of way. the air smells like damp concrete and something vaguely metallic, which, i guess, is probably the history. i’m staying in this tiny room in Kreuzberg - it’s basically a closet with a bed, but the landlord, Frau Schmidt, keeps leaving me these little packets of anise seeds. she’s a total enigma. if you get bored, Potsdam is just a short drive away.
my mission? to find the pulse of the city, the undercurrent of everything. i’ve been hitting up record stores - the *Soundvenue is a goldmine, seriously - and tiny, smoky bars where the music is loud and the conversations are even louder. i’m trying to capture the feeling, you know? the grit, the melancholy, the sheer weight of it all.
i spent yesterday wandering around the East Side Gallery, dodging selfie sticks and trying to absorb the remnants of history. someone told me that the best currywurst in the city is at Konnopke’s - i’m still searching, tbh. it’s a mission. i also stumbled upon this incredible street art scene in Friedrichshain. it’s not all pretty murals, though. a lot of it’s… confronting. like, staring directly into your soul confronting.
Someone overheard a guy at a bar saying, ‘Berlin doesn’t give you answers, it just throws questions at you until you break.’ It’s kinda true, isn’t it?
the weather’s been… persistent. a constant drizzle, like the city is perpetually weeping. it’s actually kind of beautiful, in a bleak, dramatic way. the humidity is clinging to everything - 29% feels like a personal insult. the pressure is 1008, which is… unsettling. i’m trying to channel that into my playing, but it’s hard when you’re battling a serious case of sleep deprivation.
i’ve been documenting everything with my camera - a battered Canon 5D Mark IV and a bunch of lenses. my gear list is a disaster: camera, batteries (always running out), memory cards, rain cover, a ridiculously oversized backpack, and a half-eaten bag of gummy bears. it’s a chaotic mess, but it’s my* mess. i’m also trying to find some vintage clothing - i scored a killer leather jacket at a flea market yesterday, but it cost me a small fortune.
i heard that the Berghain is notoriously difficult to get into - you have to be wearing all black, act cool, and be prepared to be rejected. i’m not brave enough to try, honestly. i’d probably just stand outside and look awkward. i’m more into the smaller, more intimate venues.
I heard from a local that the best way to experience Berlin is to get lost. Seriously, just wander around and see what happens.
i’m thinking of checking out some of the abandoned buildings - there are tons of them around here. it’s a bit creepy, but also strangely fascinating. i’m also planning a trip to Sachsenhausen concentration camp - it’s a heavy one, but an important reminder of the past. i’m linking to the official website for more info: https://www.sachsenhausen-memorial.de/.
i’m trying to find a decent coffee shop, but it’s proving difficult. most of them serve this weak, watery stuff. i need a serious caffeine injection. i’m dreaming of a proper espresso, the kind that wakes you up from the inside out.
i’m starting to feel like a ghost myself, drifting through the city, trying to make sense of it all. it’s exhausting, but also exhilarating. i’m posting this from a tiny cafe in Neukölln, nursing a lukewarm beer and listening to the rain. it’s a strange, beautiful, and utterly overwhelming experience. check out some local events here: https://www.visitberlin.de/en/events.
i’m also going to try and find a decent currywurst. wish me luck.
