Barika's Secret Rhythm: A Drummers' Detour Through Algeria's Forgotten Coast

okay so i'm sitting in this tiny cafe in Barika, Algeria, trying to write about the weirdest detour of my life. i'm a touring session drummer, and my band's van broke down here on the way to Constantine. at first i thought, great, just another dusty nowhere town. but man, was i wrong.

Barika's got this weird energy-like it's holding its breath. the buildings are all faded pastels, crumbling just enough to be charming. i swear i saw a cat wearing a tiny sweater yesterday. no joke.

anyway, the weather here? apparently it's 19Ā°c and feels like 18.6Ā°c. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. not too hot, not too cold-perfect for wandering and getting lost.

i met this old guy, Youssef, at a bakery. he said, "if you get bored, Bejaia and Jijel are just a short drive away." so i guess there's that. but honestly, i'm digging Barika's slow vibe.

overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night: "don't trust the seafood place near the square-it'll ruin your tour." so yeah, take that as you will.

random locals kept telling me about this hidden beach, "Plage de la Falaise." someone said it's got the best sunset drumming spot. i haven't found it yet, but i'm on the hunt.

if you're ever road-tripping through Algeria and your van dies in Barika, don't panic. just grab a coffee, find Youssef, and let the rhythm of the town take over. trust me, it's worth the detour.
