Bangkok Blur: Noodles, Ghosts, and Seriously Sticky Streets
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and the questionable street food here. it’s 22.43 degrees feels like 22.35, temp min 22.43, temp max 22.43, pressure 1017, humidity 62, sea level 1017, grnd level 1012. yeah, that’s…something. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. honestly, i haven’t slept properly in three days, but i’m fueled by pad see ew and the unsettling feeling that i’m being watched by a thousand ancient spirits.
Bangkok. it’s a sensory overload in the best and worst ways. like, you’re constantly dodging scooters, trying to decipher the menus (mostly pointing and hoping for the best), and battling a humidity that feels like you’re wrapped in a wet towel. it’s beautiful, it’s chaotic, it’s… exhausting. i’m staying in this little place near Sukhumvit - it’s basically a shoebox with a balcony overlooking a wall of *condos, but the aircon works, and that’s a win.
I spent yesterday wandering around the Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is basically a labyrinth of everything imaginable. i bought a ridiculously oversized elephant pants (don’t ask), a hand-carved wooden frog, and enough mango sticky rice to feed a small army. someone told me that the best street food is found down Soi 38, but i also heard that it’s crawling with rats. i went with the street food, obviously.
Speaking of ghosts, i did a little ghost hunting last night. i’m a professional dancer, so i’m used to moving around in tight spaces, but this was a whole different level. we went to a few old temples - seriously creepy vibes. i swear i felt a cold spot near the Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). it’s a bit of a tourist trap, but the architecture is insane. check out TripAdvisor for some decent tours if you’re into that sort of thing: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293916-d1238632-Reviews-Wat_Phra_Kaew-Bangkok.html.
I’m trying to keep a loose itinerary, but honestly, i’m just letting the city guide me. i stumbled upon this amazing little noodle shop last night - the owner was a tiny, wizened old man who just kept nodding and smiling. i ordered the boat noodles, and it was seriously the best thing i’ve eaten in weeks. i heard that he’s been making them for 60 years.
Here’s the gear list, because i need to document everything, even if it’s just for my own sanity:
*Hiking boots (seriously, you’ll be walking a lot)
Lightweight rain jacket (it rains when it feels like it)
Mosquito repellent (essential!)
Universal adapter (don’t forget this!)
Reusable water bottle (stay hydrated!)
Small backpack (for day trips)
A healthy dose of skepticism
If you get bored, Ayutthaya is just a short drive away. it’s like, a historical theme park, but with actual history. i checked Yelp for some good restaurants there: https://www.yelp.com/directory/ayutthaya-thailand.
I also spent an afternoon exploring the Jim Thompson House, which is this beautiful traditional Thai house filled with art and antiques. it’s a really peaceful escape from the craziness of the city. i overheard gossip that the house is haunted by Jim Thompson himself - a silk magnate who disappeared in Thailand in 1975. spooky!
And, of course, i had to visit the Erawan Shrine*, a massive Hindu shrine dedicated to the three faces of Brahma. it’s a really vibrant place, full of offerings and incense. i saw a lot of people praying for good luck.
I’m heading to the floating markets tomorrow - wish me luck. i’m pretty sure i’m going to get completely lost.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a place to get lost, Bangkok is it. just embrace the chaos, eat all the noodles, and maybe pack a ghost repellent. check out this local board for more recommendations: https://www.facebook.com/BangkokExplorers/
And one last thing: don’t trust anyone who tells you the best way to navigate the city is with a map. just wander. you’ll find your way. probably.
