bahawalpur: when the desert whispers your name

so i rolled into bahawalpur with my camera gear rattling like loose change in a tin can. this place doesn't give a damn about first impressions - it slaps you with dust and then invites you for chai. *the heat clings to you like a second skin, thick but not suffocating. i just looked at the weather and it's stubbornly stuck at 21.8°C, which feels exactly like... well, 21.95°C, apparently. if you're chasing heatwaves, pack a sweater. or don't. who am i to tell you how to live?

desert dunes

spent the morning wandering around derawar fort, which is basically nature's graffiti on a crumbling brick canvas. the way the sun hits those walls? chef's kiss.
the locals here have eyes that’ve seen a thousand sunrises and don’t sugarcoat shit. you think you’re a photographer? they’ll tell you exactly where your composition’s weak. harsh, but fair.

some dude at a tea stall told me the desert eats cameras. said if your gear stops working, it’s not sand in the lens - it’s the spirits testing you. he poured chai and winked. i’d had three cups before i realized he was probably just a sales guy for camera covers.

if you get antsy in the sand, multan and faisalabad are just a quick drive away for city buzz. but honestly? why would you leave? the silence out here is loud. heard a drunk guy raving about how the desert’s got more personality than his ex-wife - seemed legit.
the markets* near ghorghetti mosque? chaos incarnate. spices, fabric, yelling, bargaining - it’s like watching a live-action video game with bad controls.

overheard two women arguing over whether a shrine’s miracle well really cures bad moods. one said ‘it worked for my cousin’s goat!’ the other scoffed ‘goats don’t have moods!’ both agreed the chai outside was fire.

sunset over desert

pro tips: bring wet wipes. lots of wet wipes. and maybe a gas mask for those days when the wind kicks up. also, hit up Bahawalpur Museum if you wanna stare at old swords and pretend you’re an adventurer. for food, Haveli Restaurant serves karahi so spicy it’ll make you question life choices in the best way. and if you get lost? blame the desert. it’s a vibe.
